Test Pilots

I received the email below from our local Aero Club overnight. I posted the news on our notice board at work, which started a discussion with our IT manager. He disputed the claim that Winkle is arguably the worlds best test pilot, he (the IT chap) claimed that it had to be Yeager.

Anyhow I conceded that Winkle should have been described as among the best test pilots and that they all had their merits, but in my opinion no one was ultimately “the best” including Yeager. Mr IT wouldn’t agree and with more pressing “work” related things to do I let it lie. Anyhow thinking about it on the way home, I thought I would open the debate to the house and ask for your input.

The RAFA (Jersey) have arranged a talk to be given by Captain Eric “Winkle” Brown, who is arguably the world’s best Test Pilot. Captain Brown flew operationally during WW2 and shot down 4 aircraft before moving into Test Flying. At War’s end he was responsible for not only test flying all the captured enemy aircraft types, but also for interrogating the designers and production engineers and pilots. Eric is a fluent German speaker and as such also took part in the interrogation of senior German figures at Nuremburg. Eric’s talk is entitled “The post War Search for Germany’s Aviation Technology Secrets”. The Talk will start at 8pm and will last approximately 1.5 hours with questions afterwards.
