The date I have comes from the Book CODENAME DOWNFALL, and it clearly says Oct.13. Either way, by two weeks or so, Tokyo Rose was the first to do it.

I think you are wrong about the date for #1. “Tokyo Rose” was over Tokyo the first time on Nov 1st (local, or 2nd Washington time/date) 1944.

Then GDL,

I’m guessing it was a photo flight from China by XX Bg B-24 this was use to mape targets for the first B-29 raids.

The Flight took place in Oct of 44 using a Long range F-9 photo bird.

So how did I do?

Not right. It was Tokyo Rose. A XXI Bomber Command F-13 recon B-29, on Oct.13 1944. Flying out of Saipan, and piloted by Capt. Ralph.D.Steakley. The very first XXI command B-29 raid went out of Saipan on Oct.28, and attacked a Japanese sub base at Truk.

B-17/F-9 in the Pacific&CBI theatres in 1944? Quite late. I’ll check that. Are you sure it flew over Tokyo?

GDL,

Next question do you want over Toyko or just over Japan itself.

If its just Japan then I think I have the answer but I’m going to wait.

Could you give a small hint on time period for the first flight over Japan. I think I might have the answer but I need a time.

B-17B is correct!! And so is the Hellcat! Well done guys. But..

I believe the answer is a B-29 but not any Recon aircraft. I think it was the 77 aircraft dispatch for the first Air raid on Japan since Doolitltles Raid.

Not right for #1.

I will post the remaining answers soon.

I believe the answer is a B-29 but not any Recon aircraft. I think it was the 77 aircraft dispatch for the first Air raid on Japan since Doolitltles Raid.

The date was June 15 1944 and they flew from Kwanghan Air Base China and attack the Imperial Iron and Steel Works at Yawato.

9. Greatest number of fighters……..

9.

Actually I’m reserving the right to change that to…

It was the F-6F Hellcat from Grumman. Total of 12,275 Hellcats were built at the one plant.

TNZ.

B-17

Ok Here Goes,

The first production B-17 to be except by the USAAF were

Boeing Build B-17B Serial Numbers 38-211 thru 38-610 followed by a Fuel tank mod the next set of B’s 39-1 thru 39-10.

The next set was the C model that the RAF received 20 aircraft but only 19 were deleived one was damge on transport and return to the States.

As for the Me-163 the time from take off to intercept to flame out was 8.5 minute according to the pilot notes that I have.

First Flying Fortress.
Was it Y1B-17 later called YB-17 (S/N36-149) accepted Jan 1937.
Phil

Phil,

Y1B-17s #36-149 to 36-161 were all evaluation machines, not production standard models.
