Ground-based navigational aids for the new runway at revamped Muscat International Airport were tested on Monday as the Ministry of Transport and Communications prepares to open the first phase of the project.
Members of the media were invited to the airport to witness the devices being tested with a Beechcraft plane making low-altitude passes over the runway. The tests are likely to continue for another day or two.
Calibration and certification of the aids is the first step towards achieving standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Officials said these aids are of CAT2 specification that allow aircraft to land in low visibility conditions, and functioning of the airport in all weather conditions.
