TF-51 Mustang project at MeierMotors Serial 44-63473

Here it is, the newest project at the MeierMotors shop in South Germany located at the Bremgarten Airfield (EDTG)

The TF was formally registerd as N551TF in the States, the serial is 44-4463473. A German customer gave MeierMotors the order to restore and assemble the plane, of course also the German registration. A really big project, cause the plane is compeltely disassembled. The aim is to get the plane 2011 airborne… lets go

The container arrived at Monday 15th November 2010. At first the sorted all parts and began to assemble the wing.

on the left the river Rhein, seperated in two rivers; on the left the french Rheinchannel, on the right the german “Oldrhine”. The french part is used for commercial shipping to Rotterdam from Basel (Switzerland), the german part only for recreational use. These are the small things where you can recognize wether you lost or won a war …….

okay, I am looking a bit strange …. but its not so easy to take a picture of yourself while strapped in the seat and the camera ribbon round your neck, and yes I should shave my skin. Thats a banker looks like when he is on holiday and takes a Mustang ride

some pretty small updates on the TF-project

The project is finished, just small wishes of the costumer like those bombracks

They actually used filler on the leading edges and around the first 25% of the wing cord, before painting in a dull silver finish.

My understanding was that the finish on the wing was important to preserve the benifits of the ” laminer flow ” , in much the same way as a dimpled golf ball flies better than a smooth shiny one .

Finally Europe is getting some more P-51’s finished properly :diablo:
As for losing their shine, tell the owner not to be so lazy & keep up the polishing :diablo:

I’ve heard that North American painted the wings so as to smooth the surface finish of the wing as much as possible

I’ve heard that North American painted the wings so as to smooth the surface finish of the wing as much as possible, the paint acting as a kind of filler around rivets and panel lines etc.

Great work by the Meier Motors team, I can’t believe this project has come on so quickly.

Thanks nibb100, a very logical answer..yes, the reflection would be incredible.

Jeff

no, that doesnt matter. It was the wish of the costumer to paint the wing in light grey and its looks uncredible good.

Here a picture of my flight with a polished p-51 over the black forest. Again, the high polish look lasts only a few flights, after that the plane will weather in a incredible form. In my eyes, after a few flights it looks really perfect

Fabulous! but can you answer my question as to why the wings were painted and not polised?

Jeff

I would think it’s because of there being too much reflection into the pilot’s eyes from polished wings

Although I’m not a big fan of a high polish finish, I must say that this aircraft looks stunning in all details. Congratulations to everyone concerned at MeierMotors!
