Thought I’d say thanks to all at The Fighter Collection for organising another excellent ‘Friends’ Evening .
It was a great opportunity to get closer to the aircraft than is usually possible, and this years guest speaker John Beattie gave a brief but interesting history of Naval aviation and of the RNHF.
John also highlighted the problems that the flight have been having with their Centaurus engines and i’m sure there are many others like me that hope they overcome them so the Furies can be seen performing again.
Back to TFC ,after the raffle and hot buffet ,this year was to have a night running of one of the fighters, which happened to be the TF-51 Miss Velma. The evening quiet of Duxford was soon shattered by the Merlin being run up.It was a spectacular sight captured by many camera flashes and enjoyed by everyone.
Thanks again for an interesting evening ,
Steve

It scares me that he is so intimate with the lady in question.

Are you going to sort out the paint on that prop when it gets here? :p
I hope they do Steve, it looks like it was painted in the same manner as SM969 when DA owned it….wheel into paint shop and drop a grenade into the paint!

Just shows you should not believe everything you read in magazines: “After arrival Sanders dismantled the Sea Fury and packed it in to a container supported by special jigs that were already available, for shipment to the UK.”

I think they have one working engine that is on the front of WG655 when it arrives, but as for the other two not sure.
According to Pilot magazine WG655 is now at Sanders Aircraft (having been flown there by Steve Hinton) and is containerised for shipping to the UK) 🙂

Centaurus.
Yes i must admit to often wondering what exactly the problem is with the Centaurus. Is it a design flaw, or maybe down to quality of metal components.?
With the cost of restoration and subsequent high value of airworthy examples, it seems strange to go to so much trouble getting one into the air, powered by an engine that seemingly could ‘let go’ at any moment..!
Both RNHF examples are currently u/s, and both there previous two seater and SF’s G-FURY were i think lost because of the engine.. and possibly other examples as well ‘over the water’.

Centaurus
I ‘ve been wondering for a while now if TFC have a good solution to the Centaurus reliability problems that seem to be plaguing the RNHF Furies.
I can’t imagine TFC investing so much time and money in one airframe and then acquiring VZ345 if they don’t have some good answers to the powerplant problem.
I certainly hope they do ,I’d love to see that single seater out in the daylight again !!

Do TFC have a serviceable engine for their Sea Fury?

Sounded like a good evening to beat the winter blues, I keep toying with the idea of going to one, but I dont know any other members:o

You should try and go next time I’m sure you would enjoy it. Very interesting and entertaining. And I’m sure someone would talk to you even if it is just the guessed speaker :diablo:
