The film was called Saint-Ex and can be found at The Internet Movie Database. Full credit to the BFI for a speedy response to my query.
It sells on VHS for £5.99 on Amazon.co.uk

I think it was involved in some film about Antoine De Saint-Exupery. Anyone confirm this?
Indeed. I saw the film at the National Film Theatre in 1996. It was desperately sad because the aircraft had only just been lost. If I remember rightly, there was a dedication to the pilot in it.
Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of the film. I’ll contact the British Film Institute and find out.

I remember seeing the TFC P-38 at an D-Day airshow in Caen in 1994.
If I can get my slide scanner working I’ll try and put up some pictures from the show ….
