The TFC Spitfire XIV lost it’s canopy during take off run this afternoon. Pilot (Stephen Grey) okay, aborted take off and returned to parking point. Later flew the P51C in a display sequence.
On a seperate issue, and this may have been covered before, does any one know the where abouts of the Hawk 75. Know it went La Ferte but have not seen it since.

From the latest update here: http://fighter-collection.com/pages.php it looks as though the mk14 canopy is well in hand.
Actually Digby got it done without too much trouble (or cursing?) and it was aloft from DX this afternoon 🙂

What’s with everyone trying to join the exclusive “Soft-Top Warbird Club”? We’ve had Rob Davies and now Stephen in recent weeks. Surely they must be aware that the pack leader is our own “Clueless”, who has the highest hours, having flown all the way back from Fairford a while back in the soft-top XVl model 😉
Its the weather.. Haven’t you noticed we in the Uk are having a mini heat wave at the moment .. High 90’s….. everyone who can is going for the ‘soft top’ option

Hi airspeed,
I was talking to a TFC engineer and he told me the whole story. Apparently on leaving La Ferte the pilot noticed a huge drop in oil pressure, so he decided to return to La Ferte. While on finals the engine cut, but he made a safe landing without power. Once on the ground the aircraft was checked over only to find the whole thing covered in oil. Oil also ran throughout the engine completely seizing it. Steve Hinton was scheduled to fly over to france with a new engine and once installed the hawk will be flown back to duxford, hopefully all in time for legends!
hope thats enough info for you!
regards,
Kenneth.
Makes you thankful he was’nt over the channel when it happened 😮

Many thanks for the info Kenneth. Glad to hear pilot is safe and well. Sounds expensive though.

Wow! TFC don’t seem to have had much luck lately then! Glad to hear everyone involved in the incidents are ok and the aircraft are also on their way to repair.
Does anyone know what caused the canopy to come off of the Mk.14? Lucky it did not strike the tail, that could have been unpleasent to say the least.
Good luck to all at TFC, you do a splendid job and it must be typical that these things happen only a week before your big weekend! I shall be there, and i’m looking forward to it. Counting the days… 🙂

Phew! I had a bad feeling when I saw this thread title. Could have been a lot worse, but glad SG (And the Spit, more or less) are OK.

Incidentally it was Nick Grey who went up later in the P51C rather than Stephen.
Just before I left, the guys were trying the Mk.XVIII canopy for size.
I was wondering about the Hawk too….
