Thailand's Rice-for-frigate deal

Thailand’s English language newspaper The Nation reported on July 21 that the Thai government would soon negotiate with Thales International Asia PTE to barter rice for a frigate.

What ship design does Thales offer to Thailand? A Lafayette derivative?

Does the Formidable design ring a bell mate?

Some posters in the link below say Daewoo DW-5500D (export name of KDX-II) design is being offered. I guess Thales provides sensors and combat system for the ship and overall project management as well.

They should be bartering services rather than goods. What’s Thailand’s big industry again?

Oh dude come on !! Not the Thai sex industry !?!

how low can they get?if you were cash strpped and needed weapon systems urgently you would try bartering aswell!and why not if it works and countries are willing to accept the bartered goods?!i say fare play to them and i hope they get the best going!

Are trying to say that Thailand is strapped for cash?

If anything, I think the Royal Thai Navy should give up the carrier and perhaps trade it in for a few frigates. And personally, I find it hard to believe that Thailand is strapped for cash.

Thailand is a huge agricultural power and is one of the largest rice exporters in the world and is a top poultry exporter too (people tend to forget about duck and geese.)

MANY countries conduct trade on a barter basis including the US. The US had paid China for oil in the 1980s (before China became an oil importer) with tons of wheat and corn.

From an economic standpoint, there goods and currency is the same. Before we forget, currency is nothing more than a representation of goods and services.

The Thai government actually has a massive surplus of frozen chickens, and as such, barter seems a sensible way to get rid of the problem. The rice is the same story – as the farmers have increased their crop, the government gets a percentage, which it aims to barter to fund necessary projects.

Though personally, I would not buy ‘Thales frozen chicken nuggets’!!!

The question on the back of my mind is not really about the rice but that there seems to be no coherent procurement plan at all.

Buy a frigate here, a couple of tanks there oh, not enough cash? Let’s try to barter!

There is no sense (as far as I can tell) whether this fits into any existing requirement and why they need to buy it in the first place. It’s as if some Admiral (and rice businessmen) decided he needs a new ship and his buddies needed some business. :diablo:

PS: no offense to any thai friends over here

First they try chicken for fighter planes, now its rice for frigates. How low do they get?

It seems we Koreans may get million tons of Thai rice…
