That Embarrassing Moment

Okay, we’ve all made a fool of ourselves – did something (by accident or design) that we wish didn’t happen. So, with regards to aviation – visiting or working at an airshow, museum or historical site, what’s the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?

That was the day I learned that if you have a headwound that is bleeding rather profusly it’s NOT a wise decision to try & stem the flow of claret with a rag soaked in avgas & aeroshell…
smelled nice tho 🙂

Ooh, bet that stung! 😀

Getting hit in the head by a prop hanging on the front of TFC’s B25 at Alconbury in ’90. Part of the “pull it thru 12 blades” pre start malarky & some pillock couldn’t count. As I turned around to walk away he pulled it thru one more blade… CLANG!! I still have the scar.
SG’s comment: “I hope you didn’t get any blood on my aeroplane”

While isiting Duxford with a friend while I was stepping out of an airliner my mind switched to an old newsreel of a guy stepping out of a UK airliner…so I raised my hand and announced to my friend at the foot of the stairs…”I bring peace in our time”
Unfortunately as I said it, another group of visitors came into view.
They gave me a rather odd look.

Houston

Well… have had a few moments as a pilot and an airshow attendee but this one comes to mind…

A friend of mine was flying one of Lone Star Flight Museums Warbirds over from Houston Hobby airport to Ellington Field for the big Wings Over Houston CAF show back in the early 1990’s. Since I had my dad’s big Chevy Suburbon they asked me to drive over and pick them up at Ellington once they landed. The F7F, F6F, TBM and B25 had all landed so the ramp person let me drive right out on the ramp to pick them up. We are able to hang around awhile to watch the other aircraft arrive so I parked the truck. Before we walked away my friend said to leave the keys in the truck in the event that one of the ramp workers might need to move it. Well… I left the keys in it… but locked the doors! So… now the truck is in the middle of the ramp and Warbirds are taxiing all around with people wondering who parked it there!! A policeman came and unlocked it for me… but that was a couple hours later!

So now I remember to roll all the windows down if I park a car on the ramp with the keys in it!

Being discovered at midnight, with my chum Lofty, involved in a re-enactment of the Coventry Blitz in Aces High’s CASA 111, whilst a little the worse for wear the night before a Fighter Meet.

Saved by Janie (Who we’d only met a few hours previously) vouching for our good character. 🙂

She’ll do anything for (or after) a couple of drinks that girl 😀

Only part of this story is true. I’ll leave you guessing though.

I got caught wandering along the taxiway of the RIAT in 2002 by the dreaded RAF Provost whilst trying desperatly to get back to the coach. Someone had left open a gateso i couldn’t see the big NO ENTRY sign on it. When crossing the taxiway i almost made an F-15 (or was it an F-16… can’t quite remember) do an emergency stop… Ahh fun times…

Doing an airshow at Griffiss air base in the States I got talking to a US chopper pilot. I sat in the driving seat and went through some of the switches and preflight checks with him. After ten minutes answering my questions he offered to let me fly the thing…..I had to confess I wasn’t a pilot but an Engineer who had worked on helicopters. I had accidentally blagged a free go in his kite.

I know someone else who doesn’t shave their legs and has a bad habit of putting them on display at airshows, I think that would go down as his most embarrassing moment at an airshow.

Mine (so far!) took place when I was first working at Duxford as a Museum Assistant…I was on a “bin run”, and had just collected some bags of rubbish from behind Building 61 (the former Station Headquarters) Unfortunately, as I was making my way back to the van, I tripped on an uneven bit of concrete and took a flying leap…in front of the Guardroom…who happened to be on their tea break at the time…and watched the whole incident with amusement…I somehow instinctively threw the bags out in front of me in the hope that they would break my fall a bit, which they did, after I had skidded along the path on the palms of my hands and knees…hard…I remember blood all over my hands and a nice tear in my new trousers, but I wasn’t so much worried about those as I was by the fact that I had forgotten to defuzz my legs that morning, and nearly had a fit when the First Aider yanked my trouser legs up to clean my knees…I think the whole of Duxford heard me wailing “gerroff, I ain’t shaved me legs today…” 😮
