——-Between November 21st and December 19th, 2010, Belgian Defence in collaboration with the Congolese Army, is setting up an expedition to search for the wreck of the Piasecki H-21 Workhorse FG- 378 helicopter which crashed with its Belgian crew in North Eastern Congo in 1964.
The helicopter disappeared mysteriously near Stanleyville (now Kisangani) in a time of growing unrest. The (Belgian) crew composed of pilots Adj Robert Jacobs and Adj Frans Allaeys and technician Raymond Bardon is still reported as missing. The military base at Koksijde is still called “Basis Adjudant Vlieger Frans Allaeys” to honour one of the crew members—-

Hi all,

I can report some good news on the expedition.

Yesterday afternoon a mixed group of Belgian paracommando’s and Congolese military discovered the wreckage in the jungle, and they confirmed it’s identity.

Unfortunately no trace was found of the missing crew.

Best regards,

Laurent

Well, actually, bits were already found (and photographed) back in 2005 according to the Dutch text at
http://www.paracommando.com/news.php?extend.2187 .

A former Belgian Hercules pilot who was involved with several aid programmes locally sent out several search teams. These came back with photos and pieces of the wreckage, confirming the wreck was a Piasecki H-21.

The official Belgian-Congolese Army expedition will set up camp in Banalia along the river Aruwimi. From there the search party will have to hike 30 kilometres/19 miles through the jungle to reach the site of the crash.

The project will be called “Operation Buta 65”.

Interesting – It will be a job finding the wreckage in that area after so long.
