That VERY low DC-8… Video "The Human Fly"…

This one warrants its’ own thread… 😉

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJDap_1pRPg
is a short out-take,
and at

you’ll see the whole report.
From 09.38 onwards the actual flying starts, and after about 19.38 the DC-8 is back on “terra firma” again…
Yes, Clay Lacy flies some VERY low passes… 😯

More about this 1970s event?

From the quotes under the Youtube video:

from Clay Lacy: “We made a mount for him,” said Lacy. “He couldn’t have gotten off if he wanted to. He always told people he was up there at 300 mph, but we never flew that fast. The fastest I ever flew him was 220 knots, once, just for a short burst. Most of the time, we were flying at 175 knots.”

Maybe a silly question, never having worked with the DC8; but does it have a ‘flap limiting speed’?

All but the landing phase (Full Flap) appeared to be at ‘Take-Off’ flap, and they said they reached 300 mph on the final flypast:confused:

Yes, it has. On another forum there was shown a page from the DC 8 flight manual which stated that max speed with flaps dowm 16-24 dregrees max speed is 210 knots.

Mathieu.

Was at an airshow back around 1975 or 1976 in Texas where the Human Fly was scheduled to appear. Unfortunately the weather turned bad with thunderstorms that afternoon and the DC-8 remained grounded along with most of the other aircraft. Too bad!
