Thanks

Looks like they have quite a few bits of the old girl, it will be interesting to hear if they can tie it down to a particular Camel.

In a reactively moderated forum, it can take a while before us moderators can get to the computer to sort out problems.

I have heavily pruned a number of posts above; if you wish to duel, then please do so by PM, by email, or on Hampstead Heath, well away from us!

One of the best things about this forum is that it can answer many such questions, and we have had some really interesting debate. There is no reason for personal remarks, and they will not be tolerated, whomsoever makes them – we most certainly do not have favourites!

Bruce

Edit – 17th May

I had hoped not to have to come back to this, but it seems I must.

I want to leave this thread open, so we can get to the bottom of an interesting archaeological find. However, the previously deleted argument keeps coming to the fore, which is not acceptable.

For the individuals with the disagreement, please take it to private message, or email. We will not tolerate any further mention of it.

For those with a genuine interest in Sopwith aircraft in Greece, I hope we can have some further enlightening discussion.

Hi Richard
Do you meen the front diagonal strut, that goes from the bottom of the front engine mounting plate to the top longeron ?, if so, the fitting is totally wrong for a Snipe “see photo’s attached of one for a Snipe”, I think that it may be a spar fitting, but am not 100% sure as it looks a little too narrow.
I have also attached photo’s of the diagonal struts, & an SL3a which is a common fitting to many later types of Sopwith aircraft.

Yes thats the fitting, have a look at the second B@W picture in the Planetalk link, it is of a Camel, top of image just left of centre, where the diagonal brace meets the top longeron, thats the fitting I mean, it has a heart shaped hole in it as well as an arrow head shaped hole, just like the one in Greece.

Update. Dr Lagos does not think it is Greek one, he thinks ir RNAS/RAF aircraft. Thassos closed in 1919

Also, he has heard from locals that the engine was recovered around 70 years ago and fuel tank 30 years ago

So it may be that we have a crash here. Does anyone have 222 Sqn or RNAS Camel losses for this area ? Just a hope!

I would have guessed it was towards the rear as the bracing wire is short, and there are a lot of wires.

I don’t have a separate illustration of an SL1

I’m posting Pup stuff because that’s what I have, and Sopwith used standard parts, and a Camel is an evolution of the Pup

That is the fitting :D. On a Snipe & probably the Camel as well, the lightening hole that was on the underneath of this clip, was not punched out as with the standard SL1 clip, but was left solid so that the 12g bracing lug could be rivetted to it.
On the earlier Sopwith types, “Believed to be Schnieder onwards” the rear fuselage clips were of the SL# type, the later Sopwith types were fitted with SL#a clips.
