'The Aeroplane'

Whilst it’s sad that ‘The Aeroplane’ is not available as an online archive, like ‘Flight’, that’s life. However does anyone know whether an index exists for ‘The Aeroplane’ (for the avoidance of doubt, I’m not referring to its successor, ‘Aeroplane Monthly’)? If the answer is in the affirmative, is this a contemporary “year end” index prepared by ‘The Aeroplane’ (as is usually found inserted at the end of annual bound volumes) or has a cumulative index been prepared of more recent times? If there is a cumulative index, where is that to be found?

Ah well, it looks like a case of – some have and some haven’t. I only hope that those which I hope to use for research are in the “have” rather than the “have not” category – or I’ve got ten years of reading in prospect! But it looks like my hope of a cumulative index was a forlorn one.

I have bound volumes for the second half of 1929 and the first half of 1930, neither include indexes.

The bound volumes that I have for 44, 45 and 46 have a comprehensive index in the front. Each year is split into two volumes and the index (including illustrations) runs to 18 to 20+ pages of each volume. Quite extensive.

As you say, whether they have an index depends on many factors. One might be how they were originally made, either produced bound for libraries or a home enthusiast sending loose magazines to his local book binder.

Thanks, Barnstormer. I had assumed that if ‘The Aeroplane’ produced annual indexes, it is likely that they would have been incorporated into bound volumes – but I know, from bound volumes of other periodicals that I have, that this is not always the case. Sometimes indexes were made available to subscribers only, which often makes them rarer than issues of the periodical itself. So the fact that there are no indexes incorporated into a particular bound volume doesn’t necessarily mean that no index was produced. Anyhow the period that particularly concerns me, at present, is 1930 to 1939. So if anyone (I don’t know if your collection includes these years, Barnstormer?) has bound volumes of ‘The Aeroplane’ dating from this period and would be kind enough to check whether these have indexes incorporated into them, I’d be very grateful. However I’m still keen to know, in addition, whether a cumulative index to ‘The Aeroplane’ exists.

I have full years of loose issues of volumes of The Aeoplane from Volume I, Issue I through the early 1920s. But I looked in the Bound volumes I have (most)from 1913-1944 and do not see any with an index in front or back. I had not looked at them for a while. and when I saw the size of the two bound volumes for JUST 1917, I was curious enough to weigh it. Bound in two volumes (Jan-June, and July-Dec 1917) they weigh 9.5 Kilos!
