Hi all. Just a quickie.
The aircraft at gatwick air museum, are any of them still air worthy? I know that some of them still work, e.g one of the Shakletons is always started up at the airshow/country show that is put on there every year.
Thank you to anyone that can help. 🙂
P.s … 22/23 June 2003 — open day/country/airshow at LGW museum.

Just to update:-
Yes only one Shack runs. WR982 (J)
The other is slowly being restored. WR974 (K) This has been robbed of many components to get J running. It’s unlikely that
she will ever run again, but…..
Its currently being painted. A lot of the inside has already been
cleaned and refitted. New rudders will be fitted asap.
The Harrier engine is probably with the Indian Navy!
For more information see:

I am the the webmaster for this site as well as ex RAF.
(Shacks, Nimords, Lightnings Vulcans etc etc)
I am currently working on getting some more of the electrical services on J working.

B. Canuck… I have a few piccies from the openday a few years back, but quality is extremely poor. I will take some photos when I attend this years show. And as I said I will post them on the Flypast forum.

I didn’t even know there was a museum at Gatwick. Got a surprise when I took off from there the other week and saw all those interesting looking aircraft from my window!

It would be great to see a few pictures of the collection. I understand that even the Buccanner XN923 is a runner!

Is this the museum owned by Peter (Vallance?) that was threatened with closure a few years ago?

Ta for the info. Last time I heard though, the Harrier had no engine?
B. Canuck… they do run one of the Shacks on their openday, WR982. The other is just left to play a static role.
When I go up to the openday this year, I shall try and get some pics and then post them on here for you guys to see. 🙂
Cheers once again.

Are both Shack’s running condition? I have only seen pictures
of one running..I think it was WR982..is the other just for spares or static…WR974?

Only one of the aircraft at GAM is airworthy.
That is the Ercoupe 415-D.
Almost all of the others are out of hours.
The exception is the Sea Princes and oddly the Harrier.
One of the Sea Princes will probably be back running
this year. A few years ago it was taxied along the grass strip.
Sadly the Shackleton will probably never be run in public again.
This is because the insurance costs are now astronomical.
Public liability insurance is just not enough. It will be run on private only occasions.
