Hi everybody, could I pass on the following appeal for your consideration.
(originally addressed to the Chaplin of the Portsmouth Retired Naval Officers Association)
This came via the Army & Navy Club :
“Hi everyone – Hello from a rather cold Afghanistan.
Could I make a request from the Chaplaincy here for the Royal Marines?
We are asking for books and sweeties for the lads from supporters at home.
There is a lack of books and sweets always go down well. If you feel able,
could you please ask among your friends if anyone has any old paperbacks
that the lads might like to read – anything really except Mills & Boon romances.
Also sweets – the sort that come individually wrapped – like boiled sweets.
If you can help, please post any of the above to :
Rev Peter Scott, Chaplain, Cdo Log Regt, Royal Marines, Bastion, BFPO792
(PLEASE COPY EXACTLY & DO NOT WRITE AFGHANISTAN ANYWHERE ON THE ADDRESS)
PARCELS UNDER 2KG ARE POSTED FREE FROM ANY UK POST OFFICE – WEIGH THEM
FIRST THE LIMIT IS VERY STRICTLY APPLIED – OVER WEIGHT COSTS A FORTUNE.
…………………………………………………………………………………………..
Support for our forces is something that I feel very strongly about and I would like to think that most on this forum are of the same mind – so lets see what we can achieve – my wife’s managed to dig up nine parcels worth from my bookcase! – now to find where you can buy barley sugers in bulk!
As an afterthought, can you just leave a ‘Yea OK’ type message so that we can gauge the amount of response – thanks
Cheers Brian Doherty.:D

Moderator Message
LOL, You realise he is one of the moderators here?
I think he knows by now, even if he does appear to have turned his PM facility off.
Thread closed.

For a start Brian, how do you know that there aren’t any of us here who already participate in such schemes? Without feeling the need to crow about it? It is, as you say, a free world, perhaps you would be wise to remember that. As for your last comment to Grey Area, has it occurred to that some of us may wish to receive further communications from you?
Regards,

Within these forums there are posts of all kinds, including appeals in many areas, I have not treated any posts I have placed as a blog and do not consider your comment acceptable – if you have any further issues with this I request that you pass it to the Webmaster to converse with me on PM’s – I do not wish to receive any further communications from you.
Thanks
Brian Doherty.

Indeed, Brian
This is, after all, a discussion forum and not your personal blog.
So please don’t bump the thread again.
Thanks

Moderatorial Mumblings
When I started this thread 5 days ago, I did so because I felt that it was for a really good cause and that it would be strongly supported in this forum. Apart from one lady who was the first to view, nobody has left any indication of support – and this after 72 people have viewed the post.
I must admit that I am surprised and disappointed, but its a free world as they say.
Cheers Brian.:(

I did read the forum and to be honest, I can see it’s for a good cause, but the only paperbacks I have are teach yourself Portuguese, Icelandic, Russian, Italian, Polish, and Oxford Spanish and Russian dictionaries … I don’t think they would be as appealing.
I could ask my dad after my a levels are over if you would like me to?
Thank you for your very kind offer, but my comment was not intended for either impecunious students or would be linguists,:D so much as the more mature members of this forum who have the amount of worldly goods that would allow them to provide a response to the appeal. In the meantime however, my very best wishes to you in your studies and good luck for the future, you appear to have set yourself a daunting task and workload perhaps suitable for a modern day Tower of Babel.;)
Cheers Brian.

Thanks BB – personally if that was the option I’d read the M&B book!
Cheers Brian.

Brilliant,we’ve got loads we can send and I’d rather stick pins in my eyes than read Mills & Boon .
