The 'Barton Aerodrome' 1/4 scale series.

hi everyone, first post in this area 🙂

Regular readers in the history section may know that I have been researching the villages lost aerodrome from the 1930’s-1940’s, the people and aircraft.

As we have unearthed so much information on the aircraft I have decided that we are going to produce a limited run of model aircraft plans(and balsa kits) of the aircraft that were built or designed in the village by Luton Aircraft Ltd and Marendaz and others.

All plans (and cnc cut balsa/ply parts) will be in a 1/4 scale, designed for r/c flight and come with background on the original aircraft, cad images of construction and links to builds.

The full list we plan to do is:

Crested Wren, W L Manual : Sailplane c1931 (BGA0178)
Dunstable Kestrel, W L Manual/C.H. Latimer-Needham : Sailplane c1935 (BGA0221)
Luton Buzzard MK1, W L Manual/C.H. Latimer-Needham : pusher/Sailplane c1935 (G-ADYX)
Luton Minor Mk1, W L Manual/C.H. Latimer-Needham : c1936 (G-AEPD)
Luton Minor, C.H. Latimer-Needham : c1937 (G-AFBP)
Luton Major, C.H. Latimer-Needham : C1939 (G-AFMU)
Marendaz Trainer, D.M.K. Marendaz : c1939 (G-AFZX)
Marendaz MK3, D.M.K. Marendaz : c1938 (G-AFGG)
Colditz C0ck, Goldfinch/Best : Sailplane c1945

Its going to take a while to work through that great long list but work is under way on the first two and plans/parts should be available later in the summer.

All of the plans/parts are part of a community project (not for profit, non commercial) so profit from the plans/parts sold will be donated to organisations restoring or maintaining the full size aircraft.

More info to come or pm me/ visit the community website (listed below) for the spec’s and progress.

many thanks
Jenna

been a little busy with other work lately and this project has ended up being sidelined for a while.. last few weeks though I have got a bit more done and the drafts for the first kit are done.

The first kit will be the Manuel Primary, its in 1/4 scale. The plans pack is fairly comprehensive with a total of 8 A0 sheets… lol YES 8 (no skimping or cutting corners here!). At the minute the plans pack is expected to sell for £35 which I realise is more than most plans but this pack has 2 sets of plans (one in draft to build on and one in more detail as a reference.. so no ruining your plans or copying needed!).

I am going to do 25 sets of plans as a limited edition, these are all serial numbered and will come with some special decals… also included in the cost is 2 £5 donations to linked aviation charities or good causes related to project.

Lastly the plans packs are a non profit exercise, the small profit in the pack I make will be used to buy extra plan packs which will be donated to local schools and clubs to help cement local interest our our villages history.

I’m talking with a well known cnc cutting company to produce a full balsa/ply kit later in the year too.

If this all goes well then the project should be expended later in the year with a current list of over 10 new plans being commissioned.

many thanks for all the support… a pic of some of the progress!

still work on all the models to do but its getting there.

a larger pic of the models can be seen here, so far the detailing is as good as the research can give me.

(note all 3 are not finished, Buzzard need the fuselage bullheads doing right and the wings finished, Primary need the main wing and rigging, Wren needs the wing finishing and rigging done.)

I know Henlow well, my family was connected to the ATC there a long time ago.
