The Best Paintjob ever

OK so it’s old and should probably be on Flypast – but I still think this was the best paintjob ever, and on a REAL airliner. Taken at Paya Lebar, Singapore in 1969.

Was lucky enough to see a see a VC10 a couple of weeks ago doing touch and go’s at Waddington. Only difference was a was watching it form the Observatory at Lincoln Castle as it made its turns near the cathedral.

Will post a picture when i finish the film.

Yeah, but they pretty much just painted it to retire it, kinda like dressing up somebody really nice for their funeral. They should have painted it in those colours a year or so prior to retirement so the bigdog could have flown around in its original color scheme for a little while.

The early BOAC 747-100s looked a treat in those colours. It was a nice gesture on the part of BA to paint one of them back into that scheme as they they said farewell to the type from BA service, was it last year? I think it was.

For ageorge

Taken at Fairford in ’99.
The RAF is the only service still using VC10’s, but Im not sure about the Tristar.

Sorry Duess I have to dissagree.
I know I am very biassed, but I like the new Gulf-Air c/s as it trys to be different from the other gulf airlines. Incidently Oman Air is looking to start flying into LHR in the near future.

Six of one and half dozen of the other.

This was a period of time where the government adopted a pro-US policy rather than support homegrown aircraft. The highly controversial scrapping of the TSR2 programme in favour of the F-111 is the more high profile case, but the VC-10/707 contest was part of it too. Then again the BAC 1-11 was continued with, so thats only half the story.

The other half is that the VC-10 was designed for BOAC and was intended for the “Empire” runs to Africa and the like. On the more mundane transatlantic routes, BOAC preferred the 707 which I think had a slightly higher passenger capacity. The 707 they went for was a custom version: The 707-420 was a -320 with Rolls Royce Conways installed, as with the VC-10.

URMMMM??? NO WAY! Old maybe, but a classic is always appreciated here.

Nice pic Keith. VC-10, best aircraft of the yester year, along with the Tristar 😀
