Before the big jets came in the “Spruce Goose” was beaten by the Saunders-Roe Princess. Power was 10 x Bristol Proteus turboprops IIRC. Defiinitely Bristol, definitely turboprops, definitely 10 of them just which model I’m not sure of.

There is supposed to be a film coming out soon about Howard Huges, the creator of the Spruce Goose, directed by Martin Scorcese and with an all-star cast. See The Aviator from imdb.com.

You guys know, of course, that once they moved the Goose out of Long Beach, they used it’s former home as an indoor movie studion and did some filming in there for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’? I was out there touring the Queen Mary while the filming was going on, could’nt get inside the dome…

Ahh the AN226 at Farnborough in the early 1990’s. Fantasic sight to see. One still flying and one two thirds built.

Old Howie

Yes I knew they were bigger 😉 , But if I put to many clues in the first post it would have gave it away :p , Have to make them look 😮 😮 , Flying Lumberyard was another nickname 😉 , I have read many books about old Howie, And for such a nut case he did just so many things with his money, Some of the projects were just amazing 😎 , And his influence and money helped commercial aviation and military as well 🙂 , Set a few records along the way as well, And of cource he loved to fly 😀 , So he was alright in my books, Cheers every one, Great pics too, Tally Ho! Phil. 😎

The HK-1 Spruce Goose has the largest wingspan of any aeroplane at 320ft but I wouldn’t necessarily say that qualifies it as the “biggest aeroplane of all time”.

It’s got to be the biggest wooden aircraft of all time.

The HK-1 Spruce Goose has the largest wingspan of any aeroplane at 320ft but I wouldn’t necessarily say that qualifies it as the “biggest aeroplane of all time”. The C-5 Galaxy is much larger and the An-225 Mriya positively dwarfs it.
