I am surprised that this topic has not come up for discussion on this forum by now. I am interested to hear people’s opinions on not only the fact that the list was leaked to the public but also some of the issues that have come to light as a consequence. For example the many professions and companies that are automatically dismissing staff for being members of what is after all a perfectly legitimate (albeit very extreme) political party. As Nick Griffin rightly said IMO, as long as people learn to leave their political ideas at the door of their workplace there is no problem with BNP members working in any job. There would be outrage if members of the Liberal Democrats or the SNP were banned from certain jobs, so why the BNP. If you express racist or intolerant views at work then yes you should be punished, but not for simply belonging to a political party you feel strongly about.

I wouldn’t know because I don’t know any BNP members. The point I was trying to make is that how can an employer justify dismissing someone for views they might privately hold but do not express them at work.

IMHO…yes :diablo: Although their members (and I know a few) deny hating English people. They do tend to be quite evil about the British Parliament at times. I guess they don’t do much harm at the moment though.

I’ve no admiration or liking for the BNP, but if they are a legal political party then in a democracy people should be allowed to be a member of that party without it unduly affecting other aspects of their life, employment, union membership and so on, otherwise ban the BNP, incidentally I think the policy of side lining the BNP is a mistake, if you brought them out into open debate on TV and radio in the same way other political parties do I think people would soon see through them.
