The british legal system….Again…!

I couldn’t belive my ears when i listened to the radio4 news this afternoon…

I’m sure most of you have heard about those two Birmingham chaps who were wrongly convited of murdering a teenager in 1979….?
Well’ to cut a long story short, they served 18 years each before their convictions were quashed, and subsequently were released…
they then each received a substancial sum of money by way of recompense for their wongfull imprisonment….
All ok so far… i mean, A miscarrige of justice, yes, but the truth was discovered, the two men released and compensated for their trouble, nothing so unusual in that…
However… the law lords have now decided the men should re-pay £50,000 EACH for “living expenses” and “life necessities” for the duration of their stay in prison, quote….

“The three men had appealed against an earlier Court of Appeal ruling the Independent Assessor was entitled to deduct their compensation to reflect the necessities of life which they would have to buy from wages if they were free.

Their lawyers had argued it was wrong to expect people wrongly imprisoned to pay for what is effectively their “board and lodgings”.

Good tread ….another example of Red tape gone mad!

thank god that the death penalty was abolished…..if this had happened in the US…

There is, after all, no way back from the grave.

Unfortunately that is not the first case and I suspect it will not be the last. The annoying thing is they never think to make criminals pay for their “board & Lodgings” out of their ill gotten gains

I remember it very well. Friends of ours contemplated buying Yew tree Farm in about ’79ish, but after viewing Christine could not bear the thought of living there.
How come the most likely suspect, Hubert Spencer, was never arrested and charged? Is he still alive?
I have to question the decision. Public relations obviously not their strong point.

Commons Hansard document here.

It was a bad couple of years for high profile murders in the midlands. I remember Lesley Whittle (heiress to Whittle coach firm) was murdered by the ‘black panther’ Donald Neilson (1975 I think?). Nasty business.

What about those who are sent to prison and are guilty, will they now be made to pay for “living expenses” and “life necessities” ?
