The Cockpit Thread

As the “Old DX photos” thread has proven so popular, and we all like a peek, I though we could try a ‘driver’s seat’ thread. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to wave a camera in the cockpit of a number of interesting aircraft over the years, and I’m happy to share – likewise those with a similar opportunity might do likewise?

No ‘rules’ but a couple of thoughts – mystery cockits could be fun, but where poss, please put when when and what if you wish. Details of ‘non-standard’ or interesting items on view will be of use to the modellers and drivers, airframe on the forum, and make the process more illuminating. And bonus points for unusual types, version, rarety etc. Post away!
Cheers

Here’s an opening offer. MS ‘Storch’ (OK Criquet) at DX last summer. Nice. Can I have a go, Mr?

Well…

GAMSL’s are a bit tougher. MS Cricket (Storch) dunno, dunno, Sunderland, Ryan NYP replica, Fokker D.VII rep?

😀

Pretty impressive. You’ve got the last three spot-on. Here are the externals of the same aeroplanes, although not necessarily in the same order!

Well…

I know Mark P’s and Whitleyfreaks’ subjects, ‘cos I’ve been ‘aboard’ both, so I’ll let some other folks have a go. Neither were Britain’s finest bombing hour, but valiant nonetheless.

Martin’s ‘what n’ where’? – A gyro gunsight, front end of the cockpit. 😀

Nice to see this thread reappear. As well as the recent Lysander stuff, some nice ones too from the past.

Here are a few that I took this year. Let’s see who’s going to be the first to guess what they are!

This should be easy!

Hello Everyone,

I wish I was able to climb into the cockpit, but it’s forbidden.

This one recently flew south for winter and ended up returning to its old nest after many years away from home………

I am doing research on Lysanders. Anyone have photos/drawings of the interiors?

Thank you very much 682al that’s exactly what the stick looks like that’s on our Mossie.

Sincerely Gerry

Oh what the heck, here’s a bit more Mossie stuff…the bomber/p.r. yoke and a throttle box.

The instructors stick in the Mk. III (right hand seat) differed slightly from the usual fighter type stick, but it’s too cold to go out into the garage to get a photograph of that one!

Here’s a Mosquito stick (top half), of the type fitted to the Night-fighter/Fighter bomber versions, with the twin electric gun-firing button.

Gerry, as a general rule-of-thumb the Mosquito bombers had yokes and the fighter and fighter/bomber variants had a stick.

Presumably the thinking was that with a fighter you’ll need one hand on the stick and the other on the throttles when in a scrap, although I have heard it said that it was easier to chuck the Mossie around with the yoke.

Thanks Mark

I was wondering whether it was a straight stick, the typical British stick or a wheel and it looks that it’s a wheel. The Mossie that we have at the museum here has a straight stick and I wondered if it was right or not.

Thanks again, Gerry

Gerry, the most common Mossie with “gun nose” was the FB.VI (plus the Canadian and Australian equivalents). There are many cockpit pictures on the Mosquito Page website (link attached). The Mosquito Page

moquito

I’m not sure what Mk it is but I was wondering if someone might have a cockpit picture of a Mossie with the gun nose?

Thanks Gerry
