'The Dambusters' film queries

Thanks to all of you who replied to my questions about ‘633 Squadron.’ I now have some questions relating to ‘The Dambusters’ in particular the camouflage applied to each of the film aircraft. As you probably all know the Lancs used in the film were B Mark VIIs which originally had light grey upper fuselage and upper wings and glossy black on the lower fuselage and lower wings. According to the book ‘Flying Film Stars’ by Mark Ashley only NX782 had a contrasting camouflage colour applied to the previously solely grey areas and the other three Lancs were left with light grey upperworks with no camouflage pattern. However according to Jonathan Falconer in his book ‘Filming the Dambusters’ all the Lancs had dark green/dark earth camouflage applied to the upper surfaces. Close study of the photos of the aircraft used in the film shows two colour camouflage on the upperworks though exactly what these colours are cannot be determined as all the photos from the film are in black and white.

Second question – what colour were the spinners of the film aircraft? Were they white or off white or some other colour? The actual ‘Upkeep’Lancs had black spinners.

Thanks for your help.

Best Wishes,

Colin

Certain I’ve seen a colour pic a long time ago, and the spinners were red.

On watching the film it looks like the topsides were grey and grey 😉

Hopefully someone is able to help, this is a question I’ve never seen posed before and it would be interesting to find out the answer.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the spinners were red.

I’m not sure B.VII Lancasters had Post war Bomber Command light grey upper and black lower colours, apart from just one aircraft, I believe. They were mostly still in WW2 camouflage or “Tiger Force” white at that time.

Just checking if you have seen the photos from the production on this Wings Over NZ thread?

Also a talk by one of the film’s pilots

Interesting questions, which I expect will be answered very quickly by those knowledgeable in this department.

My thoughts are that the film makers weren’t really concerned with these sorts of details, neither were the film
audiences, who had just been through the war.
The makers were more concerned with getting the story across. Which they succeeded in doing.
