RE: The end of the topic ratings

I think duck egg blue undersides were the norm by then. From what I gather, there are no other clear pics of these that are generally known (and its only this week that these have even come to light, along with some equally / more rare stuff.) Oh, and the pic is a straight scan off the original negative – its not doctored in any way (nor retouched as yet!).

Can’t abide them new-fangled tin cans myself…..

RE: The end of the topic ratings

Ermmm. maybe, but as i’m more interested into MODERN planes (you know, those where you have a chance to come back alive 😉 ), i never really looked carefully. But I assume that not many pics of these planes have been made, regarding the short period of time they flew with that squadron…

The flying one also seems strange to me. And at that time, wasn’t the undersite of RAF fighters white on one side, and black on the other?

You have it Frank. Mostly. Ever seen a clear picture of a 238 Sqn Spit before?

RE: The end of the topic ratings

I’d say the pic was taken at Tangmere between the 12th may and the 19th june 1940, as 238 Sqn was equipped with Spitfires Mk 1 wearing the VK code for that period of time only.

But for the detail??? A little clue please.

RE: The end of the topic ratings

It’s a pair of Spitfires – but there is something just that little bit special about this picture. Those who realise what (and care about such things) will probably fall off their chairs.

Maybe it’s because it gives us a change of seeing in colour which is what we are used to doing everyday anyway.

RE: The end of the topic ratings

Yes I have. I have superb pictures of warbirds on the ground and in flight, (from my own camera) I have fantastic pictures of a fighter squadron at war (from their archives) , I have some stunning pictures of a test pilots career (from his archives) and I have some rather special pictures of OTU’s and MU’s and the advance through Holland and Germany from a ground-crew members archives. In fact, I have more pictures in my files than I know what to do with – other than what I am doing with them. I have black and white negatives in 35mm, 6×4.5, 6×6, 6×9, and 5×4, I have colour negatives in 35mm, 6×9 and 5×4, I have colour transparencies in 35mm, 6×9, and 5×4, I have black and white prints, colour prints, original, copy, and restore digital files. I have drawings, paintings and prints too.

But then what do you expect from a photographer / image-restorer and photographic printer? Pictures of my cat?

Clearly.

Look, why not try www.photo.net – you said you want to study photography, thats a good forum with good people. Why not spread your attention there – it would be far more worthwhile.
