So does the panel think that this is perhaps ‘the line in the sand’ vis a vis Britains continuing membership of the EU ?

So if you lot would just stop hiring prostitutes we’d be hunky dory
But she’s from Romania, so surely she is gets an EU subsidy.

A lot of the problem seems to have arisen from the new way of assessing GDP which includes the black economy.
So if you lot would just stop buying drugs and hiring prostitutes we’d be hunky dory.
You have been told.

One speculates on how much less the amount owed would be had Blair not given back a large chunk of Maggie Thatcher’s hard won rebate.
Eh?

Ah yes Bliar – he was of course after a wee job with the EU so probably thought it would help his CV – wot a dipstick LOL

We were advised last January as were the Dutch so no surprise for them.
We should emphatically withhold the additional payments towards the EU budget increase.

I am not sure they ignored the figures – I think that both the actual amount and timescale – ie by december 1 was a little surprising !
And don’t forget that any previous ‘rebate’ is merely getting back some of the (extortionate) money that we have already paid into the EU gravy train – it is not a gift from the EU Gods – whereas this is extra and unbudgetted for money at extremely short notice !

I think don’t pay it and sit back and see what happens (as long as we don’t import electricity from the EU I hate the cold)

By which time we’ll all be sick to the teeth of the lot of them.
What’s new?

Baz – I agree with your last point but not your first. After all the Dutch managed to anticipate the likely increased payment and planned accordingly. I rather think it is Treasury ineptitude not EU ineptitude and I say that as a Eurosceptic, as my various posts clearly illustrate.
I too am outraged but by the budget increase and that’s the battle Cameron should be fighting and for which he might find some allies.
The sorry saga is looking worse, it appears that this revision was known about in January, by March all countries had submitted their revised figures for their individual economies, at this stage treasury departments of all countries could and certainly should have been aware of the effects of this revision, this is when any negotiation and wrangling should have gone on, but it would appear that our Treasury and Ministers sat back contemplating their navels naively hoping that it would all just go away.
I like most, am not happy with retrospective accounting, but to plead surprise is looking more and more suspect.

Geoff – of course but WE all know it’s the game of politics. The Tories will probably be trounced at Rochester and then it will be back to business as usual. Except that it won’t because electioneering will start in the New Year in the long heave to the election. By which time we’ll all be sick to the teeth of the lot of them.

Hi All,
Camerons statement about not paying is just bravado as he will bow down in front of the E.U. like he always has done, anybody who believes the lying **** when he states he will give us an E.U. IN/OUT referendum if he gets back in is on drugs!
Geoff.

Odd we never bleated last year when we got more than this in a rebate isn’t it. Swings and roundabouts.
.
Precisely Tony.

If it is a Tory agenda, then it is one that plays right into the hands of UKIP.
My friend Nigel must be hugging himself with ill disguised glee !

A conservative agenda at play me thinks.

A 20% surcharge at short notice – to be paid by the 1st of december is the height of EU political ineptness !
I am not only outraged by this issue Charlie – but as John posted – perhaps another nail in the EU coffin ?
The whole EU juggernaught needs dismantling – I cannot see any light at the end of the Eurotunnel !
By: charliehunt - 25th October 2014 at 05:41
Why do people seem more concerned about the increased payments members have to pay under the membership rules, than the EU budget increase agreed by MEPs? The former is a storm in a teacup the latter yet another example of the EU bureaucracy being miles out of step with its membership.
By: Creaking Door - 25th October 2014 at 00:36
The EU want more money from a lot of countries: the Netherlands, Italy, Greece…..not just us.
By: bazv - 24th October 2014 at 23:01
It would not alter the fact that the EU want even more money from this very small country right on the edge of europe…outstandingly crass of the EU IMO
By: AlanR - 24th October 2014 at 22:57
There is a conspiracy theory that says Cameron planned today’s outburst to make it look as though he is
serious about getting concessions from the EU.
As it seems his advisor’s knew about this tax demand a week or two ago.
