The EU is corrupt and fraudulent

We have all heard stories of the EU and how unaccountable it is. Consequently, it is badly run with endemic fraud, corruption and presumably errors too. Given the huge budget of the EU, is this a bigger problem than most people seem to think?

What caught my attenton is an article on Accountingweb.co.uk which I can’t seem to find any more (I saw it this morning).

Basically, the EU’s chief accountant was so disgusted by EU practices, that she meade her feelings clear to Romano Prodi and Neil Kinnock. AS a reward, she was “suspended”.

RE: Discount Viagra

Of course every country is corrupt Geforce. My point is that the EU is more corrupt that most countries!

Transparency International is a NGO which publishes a “corruption percptions index” every year. It measures perceived coruption in each country. Some of you will probably say it isn’t perfect, but it still seems a reasoble effort.

In 2001, Finland was No. 1, UK was No. 13, Belgium was No. 24, USA was No. 16 and Bangladesh was 91st (last) just behind Nigeria.

If the EU was surveyed, I reckon it would rank about 40th.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-08-02 AT 06:12 PM (GMT)]It seems the Eurocrats get Viagra at a discount. All the better when it comes time to screw EU member nations.

RE: The EU is corrupt and fraudulent- so what´s new?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-08-02 AT 04:07 PM (GMT)]Actually there are 5 capitals in Euro 15 : Brussels (Parliament “EP”+ commission “EC” + council of ministers + the whole administration) , Stratsbourg (Parliament”), Luxembourg (EU court, which is not the same as the CoE court in Stratsbourg), Frankfurt (ECB, central Bank) and the capital city of the ‘host memberstate’ (EU summits). But daily decissions are taken in Brussels where the gov’t (EC) is. Only the very important issues are discussed at the summits (like the EU defence, constitution etc.).

Stratsbourg really is the least important, but the French want to keep it that way. The financial centre should remain in Frankfurt (like Wallstreet is in NYC and not in DC). I also think the ‘host-system’ is a complete waste of money, but untill there is a real EU-president (Tony }>), this is the only way to satisfy all members

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-08-02 AT 02:13 PM (GMT)]Why don’t we just execute those eurocrats like Saddam does. }>

Every country is corrupt, Europe no more than the US. In the EU there are still big differences between the Scandinavian and the Southern countries for example, though Italy f.e. is placed at number 18 of the least corrupt regimes in the world (before Berlusconi however). Just look at Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Venezuela, Columbia, Peru … those are countries where corruption is ruining a whole state. x(

RE: The EU is corrupt and fraudulent- so what´s new?

Hi Mongu. It´s not the first time either. Last year the BeeB interviewed some guy who was assigned to an EU sponsored development programme in South America. He also discovered that Spanish EU officials were acting in an, if not fraudulent, then at least in an inappropriate manner as regards funds management. He too was thrown out of his post.
Anybody out there know of a website that publishes such practices? I´m certainly not anti EU but it pisses me off no end when I hear yet again that EU officials on the Brussels gravey train with their bloody snouts in the trough. What we need is a website that names and shames those corrupt officials.
