The Even Newer (2014) Wot Plane? Quiz Thread. Rules In Post #1

The game rules:

A contributor posts a photograph of an aircraft to identify. Either use your own picture or be prepared to acknowledge its origin when finally identified (beware copyright).

The first forumite to identify the aircraft (confirmed by whoever posted the picture) gets the right to post the next one, and so on.

If he or she wishes to desist, “open house” is declared and anyone can post the next picture.

Only manned aircraft that have actually flown allowed, so no missiles/drones and no obscure unbuilt projects or flights of fancy.

A variant is to post a relatively well-known type but to ask a question as to when, where, why or who is in it.

Timing: in order not to block the thread for too long, if there is no sign of an answer or a guess within 48 hours, the poster should offer a clue. If nothing within another 24 hours, a second clue. 24 hours later the answer should be given and a new “wot plane” posted, this time as “open house”.

“Open house” automatically takes effect if the one with the right to post the next picture fails to do so 48 hours after confirmation by the previous poster.

OK, folks?

Yes, RAB, you are correct. But I did feel that I was driving the final nail into this thread’s coffin and I feel that it might best be left to rest in peace with dignity. However should you wish to wake the somnambulent then…..!

‘Will no-one rid me of this Turbulent thread?’!

Apparently, the thread is to be rid of by neglect. Maybe it is too obvious for other participants, but even I, who know nothing about light planes, was able to track down the Druine D. 31 Turbulent.

Oh well………

Actually this is the French licence built version of what many should have identified already – namely the Societé Aeronautique Normande TA 55 le 1GH!

I’m now tempted to post the following –

and then, paraphrasing Henry II speaking of St Thomas à Becket, I could say:

‘Will no-one rid me of this Turbulent thread?’!

Last clue. This wotplane has an open cockpit and a vast cargo carrying facility. It is assumed to have VTOL or STOL capacity. Although, apparently, there were plans to build both a retractable wheeled undercarriage and a float undercarriage version, only the ski undercarriage version is known to have been produced. Generally piloted by a bearded man of ample girth who tends to wear a red and white flying suit. The only known extant example of this wotplane is based in northern Finland.

I’m sorry, but due to indisposition tomorrow, the first clue must come tonight. The power, up front, is 8 RP. In common parlance, the engine is known as a Dasher-Dancer-Prancer-Vixen-Comet-Cupid-Donner-Blitzen. This wot plane’s designer’s first model was reported to be flying in the late 19th Century. And it’s proved to be so reliable that it’s not been upgraded since. So whoever claimed that the Wright Brothers made the first powered flight really doesn’t know what they are talking about! It is reputed that this is the longest operational heavier-than-air craft, in that it’s been flying for well over a century and a half. But the owner/pilot clearly appreciates the rarity of his flying machine. Like Shuttleworth, that only allows its Edwardians a brief flutter on a calm summer evening, he takes this one out only once a year. But the mileage that he covers, in the course of a single night, is almost beyond belief. Anyhow, that’s enough clues for a Christmas Eve. If you want more, maybe pull your curtains back just before midnight and look into the western sky. And if it’s not too cloudy, you might just see………..

You’d better watch out…..

It’s the ‘wot plane’ in the lower right quadrant of the image that requires identification!

I don’t think that the choice of answers would be particularly extensive!

That’s strange. Last night I received the following message:

‘Smith has just replied to a thread you have subscribed to entitled – The Even Newer (2014) Wot Plane? Quiz Thread. Rules In Post #1 – in the Historic Aviation forum of Key Publishing Ltd Aviation Forums.

This thread is located at:
http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?128197-The-Even-Newer-(2014)-Wot-Plane-Quiz-Thread-Rules-In-Post-1&goto=newpost

Here is the message that has just been posted:
***************
Santa Ana Model VM-1
***************’

Why post the correct answer and then delete it? Come back, Smith, all is forgiven!

I had two messages overnight, last night. When I went to the thread this morning, they had both gone. I assume that Smith must have deleted them during the night.

Would you care, Chris, to narrow its geographical source a little? We know that it’s not Europe, but that does leave a significant number of other continents in the world!
