The Falkland -scene 2,

just listening to the news of the vote, and thought “what if they were invaded again.”Would we have to scour the museums for aircraft, and ask the US, if we could lease back the Harriers, and barrow a carrier for them?.
We would be in a very interesting position…any ideas?

From what I can recall hearing only 3 island residents who voted opted for Argentine rule. How do you think they feel this morning, deflated?

Those 3 didn’t vote for Argentine rule, they just voted not to remain a British territory 🙂

I suspect the 3 who voted that way are well known though, and probably not too popular at the moment 😀

A couple of weeks back I was in the Falklands on the bus back to Stanley from Fitzroy. Out of the far window I saw a couple of specks on the horizon, arcing round, arcing round, lower and lower, they went out of my sight…and then a terrific roar as they beat up the bus. Without doubt the closest I had ever been to a Typhoon. 🙂

Any conflict would start after a period of “Sabre rattling” The Flight of Typhoon’s would have been re enforced and another hunter killer submarine would have been dispatched. The Argentinians could not hope to invade faced with a flight of the most powerful airborne weapons system in that part of the Southern Hemisphere and the most powerful underwater weapons system in the area.
When the Tornado’s were replaced by the Typhoon’s The Argentinians called it an escalation in tension because the know that their air force cannot compete.

IF the Falklands were taken, I doubt RAF Typhoons and Tornadoes would be involved in any ‘Black Buck’ style raids. The Argentines would have to be stupid not to factor that possibility into their defence strategy.

However, there’s very little the Agentines could muster that would stand a chance against a well organised Royal Navy task force. A single Type 45 would prove a huge threat to the entire Argentine airforce.

I suppose, as has been argued elsewhere on this forum, the “what if” is thought to be so remote and unlikely that the costs of any contingency for it could not be justified. That is certainly my view. Argentina is in no position politically, diplomatically, economically or militarily to invade, hence all the fuss and bluster from Mrs de Kirchner.

I can’t see how we could respond, unless the French would provide the carrier.
Can’t see the US getting involved with their budget cuts.
