This Act opened the show – it was awesome – the Paratrooper was first buzzed by a gaggle of Stearmans on his way down then at 100ft he was buzzed by a four ship of P51’s – what a way to open a show !!

Very nice, particularly the 1st pic. Superb way to open a show. Don’t think such a thing would be allowed in the UK.

James,

As far as I know the original 78th Fighter Group P51D that Colonel John Landers flew as ‘Big Beautiful Doll’ was not preserved.

The example at the Gathering is owned by Mike Henningsen, here in the UK we have Rob Davies P51D G-HAEC, the IWM at Lambeth also have the former RCAF example that was on display at Duxford painted in BBD colors. There may be more!

Septic.

Thanks Septic very useful I always thought Robs BBD was the real thing 😮

Here is one of Mille G, I was there for 3 days a great show and great pictures Septic.
I spent most of my time arround the Mustangs and photographed 72 aircraft counting double nose art as one eg Red Dog has 2 arts

Here are a couple of photos I shot at GML. The first is shot at 6:00am on Sunday. Unfortunately not in perfect focus, but I just felt it was pretty eerie to see all those 51s sitting quiet in the dark. The second was shot from the tower around noon, and shows some of the many Mustangs present.

Kool, it was the 1st model i made as a youngster even though Revell got the colours wrong, though i really liked them!

Managed to find a pic of the Revell box art. Colourful but inaccurate.

Thanks tbyguy,

I had realised Polar Bear was a composite airframe, I had wrongly assumed its was modified for racing. Still one of nicest Mustangs at GML though.:)

And thanks everyone for all the kind comments.

Jerry Gabe’s “Polar Bear” is most-definitely not a P-51A.

It’s true that “Moon” Spillers–the original restorer/creator–retrieved the remains of a P-51A from Alaska, but only two or three minor bits of that recovery (including its identity  ) went into Polar Bear. The aircraft is mostly a modified D-model airframe. Firewall forward is Allison of course, with cowling bits both traded for and some created from scratch.

Awfully nice pics though! 🙂

Aha! I knew there was something of the ‘D’ about it!

Awfully, awfully nice pics!

Skyraider, I know exactly what you mean about going through the images on the PC, I need to take a week off work!

Just been going through the identities of some the aircraft that were at the show, and realised that the B25 ‘Pacific Prowler’ is the old Tallmantz/Aces High camera ship known as Dolly. Veteran of numerous movies including the remake of Memphis Belle. What a summer that was at DX.

Septic.
