'The Goodies' OBE! (Plus a Few Others)

I knew that waistcoat would pay-off for Tim Brooke-Taylor in the end…

…hope he’s still got that tape-recorder with the National Anthem on it! 😀

James, We spell differently up here, it’s just that the Cornish have yet to catch up:D

As for the three young ladies, this has been arranged, however the cheap nights at any Travel Lodges were all sold out within the hour the other day, (I tried to book a few days away, now I don’t have the van).
Having said that though, the Lanesborough Hotel in London would be free any night in the next two weeks, sorry, it’s the best I can do.;)

no such thing, and it’s Pasty!

Ah you haven’t heard of my fantasy involving Mrs Thatcher, Anne Robinson, Anne Widdicombe and a night at a cheap travel lodge!

James, I used to look up to you………………………….(I am only 3 feet 6 inches tall) but now you have spoiled the impression, I will believe you are a Cornishman, however if you can make and send me a Cornish Pastie, cheese and onion please.
I also thought you were a man of taste, disalusioned again, you must be the only man in the Universe who would admit to be willing to well, need I say more,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,with Ann Robinson.;)

I mean, well, it’s not your fault is it?.

Whoa, let me stop you there Jim, I’m Cornish!
And as for Anne Robinson – well I know I would….!

Baz. I have it on good authority, you didn’t get a Gong, because you discriminated against Garden Gnomes, and put a Spitfire in your garden instead.:diablo:

I was saddened to see some of the ‘real’ heroes left off the list for some reason or another. Men, who go about their duty tirelessly week in week out for a pittance, men, who never complain or show themselves up, keep their heads down during times of adversity, brave under fire, loyal and responsible.
….footballers.

what, as an example of a small minority of people who are seen as not justly deserving of an award will always somehow get through?!:D

I must admit that it dosen’t bother me if some people do get it for ‘just doing their jobs’ (inc well known people) it just shows that some people can get recognised for doing that which ain’t no bad thing.
A system like this can never be infallible, and a small minority of people who are seen as not justly deserving of an award will always somehow get through.

Pagen – yes, of course, you are right. But firstly I would guess that the majority get an MBE or OBE at best and secondly it doesn’t make it any better because large numbers of recipients get them for simply “doing their jobs”. Witness my ex- boss, referred to above, and thousands more like him.

John Major tried to reform the system, with some effect, but it needs a radical overhaul.

James, Most of these good folks do a damned good job in the community, and do it without even giving it a thought about recieving a gong for services rendered. I wonder how many refuse/hand them back?. now THEY are the ones I would admire.

The less said about the majority of these awards the better.:(

Pete, I couldn’t agree more, Bruce Forsyth has been awarded a Knighthood:(
Why is it that these people in show business get such awards, for Gods sake they are only doing a very highly paid job at the end of the day.
When did you last hear of Joe Blogs who has worked on a lathe from the day he left school until the day he retired, get such an award.

I think you two have fallen for what the media tell us a little too much, they are bound to report the high profile awards but ignore the unheard of people, but they are on there.
Here’s the list it makes interesting reading, http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/documents/digitalasset/dg_197792.pdf
Three quarters of the 965 successful CBE/MBE/OBE etc nominess are people that have been recommended through their outstanding work in the community, many voluntary.
This is a good example, and certainly not something I would fancy!
“Diana Caldicott, who for over 39 years has done other people’s often dirty and smelly laundry on a voluntary basis through the WRVS Laundry Service in Malvern, receives an MBE. She deals with an average of 37 clients per week, and around 1,900 bags of washing a year. Her service is a lifeline to those in need”

In respect of ‘Joe Bloggs’ getting an award apparently:

Warren. Out of all the Joe Bloggs awarded I wonder just how many held “Office” in County Councils and the like?.or were in a position of power.

That is an interesting statistic but a fair number might well fall into the same category as my ex-boss many decades ago, referred to a few posts ago, receiving his MBE because his time was due. I wonder how many are simply members of the public who have been given a gong – usually BEM or MBE – for selfless volunteering or charitable good works of some kind or another. Or great acts of bravery or courage.
