The Great F1 Breakup

One of the few sports I actually follow with any enthusiasm, it seems that 8 of the 10 Formula 1 teams have decided to break away and form their own championship.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8108488.stm

If it goes ahead then as a fan I have little alternative but to watch the new rival Championship, whatever it may be called.

Any thoughts, comments?

But it was the turbo era which brought in pitstops…..

Touring cars have tried the first-to-last grid but even I’d have to admit that it may be rather too hairy for open-wheeled cars.

Get rid of the pit stops ; if you see a car in front of you then the only way to improve your position is to overtake, rather than think ‘I’ll keep the gap steady at 1.2 secs and hope that my teams pit strategy is better than his….’

Really, all this ‘1st place is 20 secs in front of 2nd, who is 21 secs in front of third’ is a bit of a joke – I’ve seen closer finishes at Le Mans…..:(

Put someone interesting in the commentary box.

Pitstops.

Not enough teams

Once a season they should reverse the line-up, the pole sitter plum last etc only telling the teams 10 mins before race. What a race that would be.

Once a season only the girlfriends and wives do the pitstops (allowed a weeks notice for training) That will make the pitstops more interesting.

Once a season reverse a track and go anti clockwise 1 hour before qualifying.

how would you make it more interesting?

I’m not sure how Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone got ownership of the sport in the first place.

I’m not sure what ruined F1 more…them or
too many years of Ferrari domination and the races turning into MS victory parades. (Nothing against Ferrari or Michael, but it just got too predictable).

Races with little/no passing, and just 1-2 teams that have a realistic chance of winning have turned F1 into a naptime.

I personally hope they do too. I’m sick Of Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone just as the FOTA are.

I do believe I heard a journalistic colleague yesterday ask for editorial permission to refer to those chaps as a pair of ‘Grand Prix’… Naturally I’ve no idea what that could have meant..? 😉

While I don’t share your enthusiasm for the sport, I wouldn’t be too concerned. The Premier League (Football, which is my sport) was initially formed by all “Division one” clubs breaking away and the FA etc followed PQD as that was where the money was clearly going to be.

Nobody will kill the goose that lays several thousand golden eggs – the TV rights (I would imagine) were sold on the basis of all teams competing and if the have to make up the numbers with Skoda go-karts etc then they will be refunding the BBC big time!

The FIA (is that what its called?) won’t risk a multi-million pound business like that, the same way the FA wouldn’t and eventually will follow a European football league for the money – oh, they already did !
