P9444 at Horseguards, BoB week, 17-9-49. Could this have been an early attempt at a two-seat Spitfire, using a Hurricane canopy & doghouse? 😀

Wow,sounds like an interesting experience Mark.I dropped into the Science Museum yesterday while I was ‘up in town’ and had a good nosey around the flight gallery (again-this was my second visit in just a couple of months.)I dropped in on a whim,so hadn’t taken my camera with me or anything like that, and I have to say I probably enjoyed the visit more for not having brought my camera.I just wandered round and took my time and took things in,rather than rushing around for the best views and worrying about lighting effects etc. It’s amazing how many historic aircraft are crammed into such a relatively small space, and the engine collection is impressive too.
As some of you may know, the Supermarine S.6B has been undergoing some renovation work over the last few months, with various bits away at Skysport. The work now appears to be finished, with all the ‘This aircraft is under restoration’ placards taken down and all the bits back in place. She looks great. 😎
Do you have any pics of P9444 in storage alongside the Hurri Mark? (hint, hint)

Ant,
It is L1592.
Picking up on a discussion paper put out by the Royal Aeronautical Society concerning the ‘listing’ of significant historic aircraft, two sheets of foolscap, my friend and I set out to find the Spitfire P9444 listed as stored at a Museum at Sydenham, South London.
Bear in mind this was all pre the mass communication that we have today. Well we ended up at the Hornimans Tea Museum to find it wasn’t there but a helpful curator pointed us two naive teenagers at the Science Museum Storage facility a couple of miles away.
It was Saturday afternoon, it was winter, it was raining and it was all shut up – so we rang the bell.
“You want to see the Spitfire” said the janitor. “Absolutely no problem”.
Well he showed us everything aeronautical that they had. It made his day and it certainly made ours.

Judging by what appears to be an early style windscreen,I’d say it’s either P2617 now in the BofB Hall at Hendon or perhaps the Science Museum’s example I posted pics of above, although I’d have thought that would’ve been at south Ken already by the time of the pic.
Does anyone know for certain whether P2617 served in the Battle of Britain? It was for a long time stated that it was under repair during the BofB period having seen action in France in the spring.Since then some, including one or two B of B vets have come forward stating that they have ‘617 in thier logbook.Anyone know for sure??

682al had posted this on the ‘Old UK aircraft scrap’ thread
These are Hurricane centre sections being scavenged for parts before scrapping, in the 1970’s. They had been salvaged from North Shore Demolition (?) in Blackpool, some years previously, by N.A.P.S. The plan was that they would be offered amongst B.A.P.C. groups. For reasons unknown to me, the plan fell through and the frames became a nuisance. They went back to a scrappie…

Finally. A picture thread about something that doesn’t start with Spitfire or Mustang. Perhaps things might change here….It’s wishful thinking anyway.
I suppose a P-40 thread like this will never surface, but the Hurricane (being my favorite British fighter of WWII) is the next best thing in my opinion.
What great photos. I really love the Mk.IIC photos. It’s my favorite model.
Thanks for the wonderful photos.
