The international registration VT!

Yes, of course it belongs to India, but they don’t want it anymore! Of course it has roots in history, so do you know what it stands for?

The Indian government is asking ICAO to allocate a new prefix, any suggestions?

VT was Viceroys Terriroty till the late 1960s as far as i remember. After that DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) got the lable ‘viceroys terriry’ removed through a referandum in the Indian parliament but still kept the VT as the code.

I personally don’t see any need for DGCA to ask for the change of VT to something like BM (Bharat Mata) or something. Although the British rule is something Indians would like to forget.. the truth is it moulded a major part of Indian history and just by changing names you cannot “modernise”, which these things are aimed at.

Looks like someone at the DGCA was just simply bored.

Good report Steve about VH.

The VT information came from a newspaper reporter in Delhi, so may be correct or an urban myth!

Like VT for India it doesn’t really stand for anything.

You’re right

Not correct, Post 5 is the official explanation.

I’d be interested to see a source? With ICAO prefix’s the letters themselves don’t officially have to stand for anything. There is a certain logic to what they correspond to in a lot of cases but not all, its quite rare again for them to actualy stand for something quite specific like Viceroy’s Territory…

David is right, it stands for ‘Viceroy’s Territory’.

You missed one Mark, the Falklands, VP-F.

India initially wanted to use the prefix BM which stands for Bharat Mata (Mother India) or BH, for Bharat but changed their minds when they realised that the B series were allocated to China. Another option was IU for Indian Union but of course the I’s belong to Italy.:)

Marshall Islands

The Marshall Islands were at least named after a British captain!

It doesn’t stand for anything directly.

However the V* series of registrations denotes ex British colonial territories. Many countries abolished their V* prefix after independence (such as Hong Kong, who moved from VR-*** to B-***)

Countries that still retain the V prefix are:

Antigua: V2
Australia: VH
Bermuda: VP-B
Belize: V3
Brunei: V8
Cayman Islands: VP-C
India: VT
Namibia: V5
Marshall Islands: V7
Turks & Caicos Islands: VQ

VN is the only one that doesn’t really fit the pattern, but obviously that stands for Vietnam.

Also I’m not too sure about the Marshall Islands in that list either as they were never a British colony…

Viceroy Territory? My siggestion = VT. Unless they want to spend needless time altering all the paperwork to a new prefix. If they do want the latter, perhaps SI standing for Subcontinental India. (Would have done IS for Indian Subcontinent but don’t think it would be allowed)
