The last Caravelle at Manchester

Ok chaps. This might be in the wrong section but…
Just after I moved up to Manchester about sixteen years ago a Caravelle dropped in. It was rare then and I think it was the last visit of the type. Can any one tell me when, who’s and why?
Thanks
Don’t phone in it’s just for fun:)

I’ll start a separate thread about some other old Turnhouse Caravelle musings

Sounds good to me!

It’s certainly possible, I have the main movements from the Scan archives and for June 1969, it mentions EC-AVZ seperately as well to the list I have already mentioned but gives the same date. For July 1969 it states “nothing of interest”. These things are not 100% accurate anyway. As a matter of interest it shows a Finnair Caravelle arriving from Brussels (OH-LSE) on 29th August 1969. I never knew about the Iberia service until I was walking through the terminal one day in June 1969 and saw an Iberia Poster advertising the service. How I wish I had tried to get hold of one of the posters.

Apologies to all for the thread drift but it was about Caravelles!! 😀

OK,my last post about Edinburgh and Caravelles but.. I think sufficient time has passed for me to admit to being a former SCAN editor and I think I may have been there for the Finnair.

Sterling Caravelles were a regular sight at Ringway when I was a lad.

Every Thursday afternoon, if my memory serves me well. 🙂

Caravelles? It was Sterling DC-6s when I started. In fact OY-BAS was the first registration I ever wrote down as a junior spotter in June 1969.

Must have been quite a sight along side the Hindenburg:D

Was Manchester ever a regular Sterling destination?

I wouldn’t be surprised if it were Sterling. Did it have a red tail with a white “S” on it?

If I recall correctly there were only three Caravelles around with Sterling in 1993 and I think they at that time were in the process of being exported to Colombia. I deliberately say “in the process of” as the Colombian buyers wanted them to leave Denmark registered in the Colombian experimental category, the Danish CAA not being very enthusiastic about the idea and stalling things somehow.

Was Manchester ever a regular Sterling destination? They were more into ..ahem.. more sunny places.

I think there were more than 3 flights because I saw EC-AVZ on the 12th July 1969 (I don’t have access to my full records for 1969)

Air Toulouse were flying into the UK in 1993.

I flew on one from Bristol to Toulouse, when Filton was snowbound, and was one my way to work at Airbus in November 1993

I have a picture of a Hispania Caravelle at Glasgow in May 1986, the last ones operated into Glasgow in October 1986 with the 737s taking over the following year. They folded in 1989.

Iberia’s experiment with Caravelles out of Turnhouse to Barcelona was a bit of a disaster due to operational problems at Turnhouse. Only 3 services
were operated
EC-AVZ – 14th June 1969
EC-ARJ – 21st June 1969
EC-AVY – 28th June 1969
The remaining flights were diverted to Abbotsinch.

If you can pin the Manch movement down to Month and year I’m sure someone could look it up in ‘Winged Words’.

Mmmm I have got it down to1993-4:o

The Caravelle last flew in Europe in October 1996. This was the Caravelle 12, also known as the Super Caravelle, not to be confused with the Concord(e) which also used the name as a project name.

There were twelve model 12’s built and Sterling had 7 and Air Inter had 5, so this should narrow the choice of the Manchester visitor!:)

I don’t think there were any Caravelles operating from Spain that late but a number of French operators, including the Air Force, still had them and possibly also Transwede.

One here and they were EC- registered

I would query the 1990 date on this picture. Apart from the fact that Hispania went bust the year before, the last flight into Edinburgh by EC-DCN was on 21st September 1985 (her first into Edinburgh was operating for Trans Europa on 18th October 1980)

Hispania were flying Caravelle charters into Manchester towards the end of the caravelles lifespan.

Now THAT rings a bell! I’m sure that the one I saw was an EC- bird.

True, but they were replaced by B737s around 1983-84.

The airline went bump altogether before the end of the decade.
