The Last Link With The Fairey Hendon Passes

Sgt John Whitaker was probably the last person still with us who flew as aircrew on the very short-lived Fairey Hendon. He was a wireless operator who had learnt his trade in Valentias and Wallaces, before joining 38 squadron at Marham and the Hendon. He later moved on to Wellingtons and then had a distinguished period of service in the Western Desert on mobile W/T units.

I was privileged to know him and listen to his many stories – both amusing and amazing. Sadly, John died on Tuesday after a short illness, just a few weeks short of his 94th birthday.
