The last V.W. Kombi to be made!

Only 600 to be produced and then that is it! The longest production run in history, they claim. 😀

A friend of mine is looking for a scrapped caravan to rip the innards out and transfer into a van.He is very mechanically minded and hands on so it will probably cost him very little.

Most camper vans are well overpriced for what they are. Even when getting quite elderly, they still fetch silly money.

I looked at a van last year that is based on the old LDV Pilot van (the GPO type). A nice conversion but £8k for an eleven year old vehicle? As a van it was maybe worth £1.5k which makes the bed, sink, cooker, fridge etc worth £6.5K? I don’t think so, you could furnish a three bedroomed house for that!

It looks like the old girl will have to soldier on for a few more years yet.

If you can afford that then you aren’t going to worry about the mpg.

I shed no tears over its passing.

You’ll not be buying this one as a run about then?

The VW Kombi built in Brazil is a complete heap of junk compared to the German versions. I know somebody who bought 6 of these things to hire out for holidays.Within 2 months 5 had serious faults and failed completely, he went bust over it.

I shed no tears over its passing.

I remember driving a mid-seventies Type 2 Kombi across the Humber Bridge in high winds back in the early nineties. I’m normally quite brave and will take things such as heavy turbulence in aircraft in my stride, but I don’t mind admitting that, with the lack of weight over the front wheels, I was a little anxious, fearing that with the appalling directional stability, we were going to go over the side.
I’m not into camping but if I was, a nice new Caravelle with an efficient Tdi engine would be much better, if rather less characterful.

Great vehicles in every way, until you pull up at the pumps.

My first experience of a Type 2 camper had the 1.7 twin carb engine and was quite quick (in a comparitive sense). At speeds over 60 m.p.h. you could actually watch the fuel gauge needle dropping steadily towards empty.

My 1.6 aircooled Type 2 could achieve 28 m.p.g. if driven ultra steadily on a long run. However, with ever increasing fuel costs, it had to go, especially since it was only being used to lug stuff to and from the ‘jumbles (girlfriend has no interest in “rough camping” so forget those cosy nights at the campsite).

After several years without a camper, I bought my tatty old Nissan Vanette on a whim. Still wonderfully “old tech” and fixable but a better van in almost every respect in my opinion. Up to 43 m.p.g. from a 1.9 diesel and its size permits it to operate within the London Low Emissions Zone whereas most other old diesels are now banished from anywhere within the M25 circle.

That said, offer me a good condition “splitty” and I might consider a swap…
