What was the WWI German aircraft used in the 1987 Australian film ‘The Lighthorsemen’? It looks decidedly like an SE5 to me, but I know very little about WWI planes so I’m undoubtedly way off the mark.
Who’s was the plane? Does it still fly?
Also, does anyone know what became of the three Mk I tanks they used in the film? I assume they were replicas of course, but they looked great. Are they preserved anywhere?

To answer Dave’s original question, I am not sure if it is VH-UQE or VH-UVX. Both are with Geoff Davis in Adelaide and are “airworthy”, but I do not think they have flown for some time. Yes, the aircraft featured was returned to stock condition after the movie.

Brought back from the dead whilst trying to find suitable pictures for another thread! 🙂
It’s an Avro Avian Mk IV M, suitably modified.
I am now going to shamelessly “steal” said pictures…

My first thought was a heavily-modified Tiger Moth – look at the fuel tank in the upper wing. A major Tiger hallmark, if I’m not mistaken.
However, a bit of closer inspection reveals a very different landing gear (although, again, this could have been changed?) and no stagger on the wings.
Apart from that…

Whatever it is, it’s not a Jenny or Standard!
Not only are the wings too short (as pointed out above) but so is the fuselage. The tailplane shapes are nowhere close either.
Finally, the engine cowl is not for a OX5 or Hisso.
There are plans to build sub-scale Jennys…but even they look closer to the real thing than this.
Could it be a modifed Stampe? The fuselage and gear look close, but the wings are very different.

I know it’s an old thread but it saves starting an identical one, plus this one has photos! Got ‘The Lighthorsemen’ on DVD for christmas and wondered what the aircraft was – any idea? By the way, the tanks are replicas of Mk IV’s not Mk I’s, and considering they’re only briefly shown they’re very good!

I have to agree, the wings are the wrong shape for a start. Here’s the Shuttleworth Collections example for comparison.

It doesn’t realy look like a SE5. The landing gear doesn’t look right at all. But this certainly a plane in germin disguise. It looks to me like a short winged Curtiss Jenny.
