The Lightning

Modern jets have their engines side by side, can anyone tell me why the Lightning had hers on top of each other?

And lets not forget the gun pack with its ammunition right in front of the ventral fuel tank or the delightfully volatile Avpin tank not far behind the pilot!:-)

Reduce the overall cross section and therefore reduce drag.
