Starring Jack Hawkins and filmed at Wolverhampton(Pendeford) aerodrome in 1956 using a Bristol Freighter. I have not seen this film since the sixties. Is there any copies out there, it would make a great DVD like “High Flight”. These two film’s seem like lost treasures to aviation enthusiasts, can someone try and get them released to DVD or the TV screens again ?

‘Man in the Sky’ is shown on the ‘Movies for Men’ channel seemingly every other day!

As has been said some of the late 40’s early 50’s films well the one’s with a aviation content are very interesting, even the syfy rubbish nearly always has scenes of fighters taking off to attack the “saucer’s”. I watched “seven were saved” on YouTube, you can see most on there, and it had a rescue Catalina landing at sea then using JATO for taking off, never seen that before.
regards,
jack…

For those who, due to the surfeit of soaps, gameshows, C grade ‘celebrity’ appearances, home search, cookery and reality television programmes and televisual rubbish of a similar nature which subsumes the airwaves these days, like me frequently resort to the ‘Talking Pictures’ channel, it’s fascinating to note the amount of period aviation material to be found in the generally rather obscure British B movies, of the fifties and sixties, that are shown there. But it does irritate my wife intensely to have her viewing of these films interupted by me shouting ‘look, there an Airwork Viking 1B’ and suchlike!

I agree and ones that spring to mind “The Iron Lady” in colour with HP Victors in white flash, “I was Montys double” with Avro York [painted out markings] and a firm favourite “Conflict of Wings” with Meteor, Vampires and Swift all in colour on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=US74bAu4wTM
All starring well known actors [if you are of that age] of the 50s and 60s

Since this ancient thread was created, a few years ago I stumbled across another late 50s UK film I’d never heard of.
Of course, I can’t recall the title, but it was about a UK based space ship. The film began with the ship’s pilot working as an aircraft test pilot.
Lots of colour shots of a prototype Gnat in temporary (“B”?) registration. I believe a Victor was also in it.
EDIT: The film was Satellite in the Sky, the aircraft was the Gnat prototype, Midge…and the bomber was a Vulcan. Aside from that, I got everything right. 🙂 But my point remains, lovely color shots of the aircraft.

My point is, there are lots if seldom seen films out there with great aviation content.
Now, thanks rob the web and various TV channels, we can see them…at least occasionally.

Nice to see a Dragon Rapide and Miles Messenger on the tarmac – although a smudge obscured the latter’s tail so couldn’t be certain.
But why did he come in hot on one engine in stead of making a steeper approach on idle so as to minimise the asymetric thrust? Was it just for heightened tension in the film?
Probably just for heightened tension, like making the tyres squeal on the grass.Great stuff though !

I agree, I don’t by pirate goods…but in this case…
If the copyright holders aren’t interested in making some money off if it by making it available….you’re not taking money from their pockets.Besides, the copyright may have even lasped.
In that case, you could legally copy it and sell it without fear of repurcussions?

Just caught up with this thread. Came across this YouTube clip from the film – pretty good quality – shame the full movie is not yet available on a legit DVD, but we live in hope:

I do not buy “pirate” goods but have paid my $20 to get my hands on something I have been looking for for a long time and I can’t find anywhere else.
Should I have bought the DVD?

“The Man in the Sky” IS available on DVD
I have watched it today after receiving the disk from the USA (with the alternate title “Decision Against Time”) via a very nice organisation that sells classic films but, as in this case, “makes available” for a very reasonable charge films that are not currently published on VHS or DVD.

Should I post a link to the sellers?
Should I expect the moderators to take exception if I do?

You are right T-21, we commented on the lack of cars! Thanks for the clarification on the Freighters used. I suppose the historical part of the film was as much for Wolverhampton Airport as for the Freighter aircraft. Incidentally, what happened to the control tower?
By: T-21 - 2nd March 2008 at 17:33
Hello Newforest,
Glad you saw the film ,nice to see hardly any cars in the street’s and no mobiles !! There were 2 Bristol Freighters shown in the film, one having maintenance in a hangar. This is G-AIFM which is the aircraft that ended up in the southern boundary ditch, but was repaired. This film is a lovely record of Wolverhampton airfield before the dreaded housing estate swallowed it.

Unfortunately a film I have not seen, but gets a great review here.

Unlikely to get a 50 year old Ealing film released to DVD I think.:(
Just watched the film last night thanks to a forum member’s generosity!:)
The plane was G-AIFV from Silver City. 🙂 The practicing of the single engine landing was carried out at Lydd airport but when the filming was done at Wolverhampton on 15/5/56, the plane overran the runway and was damaged and then repaired. It ended its days at Lydd in 5/62.
