In today’s Telegraph its “Britain at War” column, reproducing the headlines of 70 years ago, under headline “450 MPH Fighters for RAF” it refers to a project called the Manta – 400mph with a very big range and powered by the 1,000hp Allison. Does anyone know anything more about it?

Hah! Now someone does seem to have found exactly what the article reproduced in the Telegraph described. Interesting – thanks.:)

P51 seems very likely, but out of interest I did find this:

P51 sounds the most likely
Late 1940 would be about the right time for a morale-building announcement of the order placed in the March.

Unless I have missed something these references are to a late 50s design, whereas the Telegraph article is reproduced from 1940, described in my post.
