The Martin Jetpack

One of the displays that I was really looking forward to at the Wanaka (New Zealand) air show was the Martin Aircraft P12, usually known as the  Jetpack.

I have seen static examples of this device, but never one in action.

Sure enough, there was Jetpack ZK-JMK carried (dragged?) out for action on the day.

As you can see, it requires a starter trolley to get going

We were told that due to probelms (CAA certification?) the flight would be unmanned, under radio control.
Oh dear.

The thing did get going, and appeared to be controllable

The thing is tremendously noisy, even from a distance, and has a payload of just 120kg.

Recalling the initial concept of a small, low-cost handy method of personal transport (rather like an aerial Segway) and after watching this demonstration, I’m quite glad I don’t have any money invested in it.
