The Master Vs The Boss…

Hi All;

I’m having one of those moments when you’re trying to recall something but can’t quite get there! I could lose sleep over this..
I’m trying to remember which year it was at Legends when Ray Hanna and Stephen Grey performed that absolutely fantastic tail chase routine at Legends? Ray was flying the Sea Fury ( in Iraqi markings at the time I believe ), and Mr Grey was flying the Bearcat. I just remember that it was one of the most impressive single displays that I have seen in most of my airshow days. I know the crowd loved it and I believe that there was also a bit of banter and rivalry between the two which some guy with a scanner nearby was listening in to.
Anyone else remember this display and which year it was, coz I can’t find my old programs anywhere…

TIA

If it’s the one I’m thinking of, then I think it was 1995, possibly even the year before. 😀

Hi Fighter Sweep,

Love the Avtar by the way.

I can confirm it was 1995, as it was the year I got married, the only Legends show I have missed!

The Ray Hanna/ Stephen Grey routine is also avaliable on the video @Flying Machines monthly vol 2 1995. I have seen these old tapes on sale at Duxford shows @ very cheap prices.

That was Charlie Brown and Mark Hanna at Duxford. Not sure what year off hand, but it’s from one of the Airshows that gets screened on Discovery Wings from time to time….

It was 1999 and it is featured in the Flightpath show subtitled Spitfire Breed on Discovery Wings.

I remember seeing Ray & Stephen doing that routine in the Fury & Bearcat at the 1998 Cranfield Classic Jets Show.

Talking of unrehearsed tail chases does anyone remember a chase between a Spitfire and a Buchon (I presume they were MH434 and G-BOML) where the plan was that the Buchon was victorious, but the Spitfire pilot ended up ‘shooting down’ the Buchon?

great tailchases or displays

I seem to remember a tailchase at a legends show with Ray Hanna leading in the Iraqi Fury ,Stephen Grey following in the Bearcat, and Steve Noujaim bringing up the rear in the late Paul Morgan Sea Fury.
That was great,Hanna was really giving the Fury a workout, the commentator was loving it too judging by his commentary, got it on video somewhere.
Also remember Stephen Grey doing the joker routine in the Spitfire XIV when it was the new addition for the year, that was a special display.
Going back a few years to the Great Warbird shows at West Malling ,Stephen Grey and John Allison did a great tailchase with Grey in the Bearcat ,and Allison in Lindsay Walton’s french aeronavale Corsair, video’d that great display as well.
Some great memories, just as well we record them so we can watch or remember these great pilots and the aircraft they displayed so well, just wish i had video’d more of the frightening blighters.

Flying Legends 95

The Sea Fury/ Bearcat tail chase was certainly 1995. I did too actually witness it in person. Ironically last week I finally obtained a copy of Flying Legends 95 video through the good people at www.airshow.tv. They still have copies of the show left.
I did get to watch it the other night and it they did do a good job of filming the event.
A rather sobering thought though, is how many of the aircraft at show in 95, have since crashed !! P38 , Mosquito, Spitfire TE556, P63.

SpitXIV….

It’s funny that you should say that, because Paul Bonhomme’s display in the TFC Spit XIV equally ranks as my other all time favorite display. I recall jumping around like Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun all the way through that routine. What a corker that was, but then I’m biased because the clipped wing, low back mark XIV is one of my favourite warbirds..

Thanks for bringing up a very fond memory there..

On a parallel thought, I have to say that Paul Bonhomme’s display in the TFC Spit XIV prior to the final Balbo flypast two or three years ago was one of the best I’ve seen in recent years. He certainly did “pole it around” with some superb (IMHO) flying.

Auster Fan,
This was discussed a little while ago, can’t find the thread at the moment, and I think it was narrowed it down to the 2000 Flying Legends show (not positive so don’t shoot me if I’m wrong)
A cracking display and his smile after climbing out was enormous so I assume he quite enjoyed himself 😀

I got half of it on video, (not brilliant quality – my 1st go with a video I seem to recall – 95 I think – can check) the reason being that after a short while I knew I was viewing something “special” so I had to switch off and watch. I now kick myself when I view the “short” version of the display – there were vapour trails comming of the Seafuries wings as Ray pulled it around in his relentless persuit of Stephens Bearcat. On one bit of the tape Ive focussed in on the Bearcat nose down and going for it, in the blink of an eye the Seafury comes down from higher up, inverted, rolls out and jinks in right behind, you can almost hear the Rat-a-tat-tat as Ray zeros in before Stephen brakes away. Best “unrehersed” tail chase Ive seen.
Must look at it again tonight!

Tail Chase…

Thanks for the help guys….it was just the year I was trying to remember as I know that DD Videos do a few of the older Legends shows on video. I guess I should look at the timeframe that the Sea Fury wore the Iraqi colours…
I really wouldn’t mind seeing the display again, I only have still photo’s after they both landed, lapping up the applause and waving as they taxied by the crowd.
A great airshow moment indeed…

Can’t help with the date, I’m afraid, but it was REALLY vintage stuff, superb flying…

Two of the best, in two of the best, at one of the best!

If it’s the one I’m thinking of, then I think it was 1995, possibly even the year before. I was using my mountain bike to be able to get around as many different positions as possible on the south side of the airfield, and I have a great bit of video of the pair streaking low right over me, so low I could smell the avgas fumes as they passed…… 😀
