RE: The Maybach!
New wealth is admired here too, but the new rich want everyone to think they are old rich. Well, some of them. The other new rich people are pretentious and arrogant!
Guess you’re right about a simple cultural difference.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-11-02 AT 00:26 AM (GMT)]Cultural dissonance I suppose, here in America, it’s very cool to be the newly rich. It means self-made man. Old money is not held in the same esteem, for it represents daddy’s money. The latter is to be envied, the former admired. The only thing worse than old money is pretending to be old money.
Hehehe Mickey Mouse. You ruined it, ruined the whole thing. :7

RE: The Maybach!
You think a Rolls looks silly? I see your point, but the Maybach has “MM” on its front. Rolls-Royce or Mickey Mouse?
Besides, stretch limos smack of excess and mafiosi to me personally, whereas a RR signifies quiet afluence and a confidence with wealth. Sort of “old money” vs. nouveu rich. Jags are just like limos from that perspective.

RE: The Maybach!
The thing is, if you’re not a citizen of the Commonwealth, being chauffeured around in a Rolls can look very silly. Many American billionaires prefer the unassuming Linclon or Cadillac for instance. Corporate VIPs the world over are comfortable in a Mercedes, so I suspect the Maybach will do quite well.

RE: The Maybach!
Not sure who the car is meant to appeal to?
If I was being chaffeur driven (sigh) it’d be a Rolls, for no other reason than..it should be a Rolls.
For driving myself, I always went for Aston DB7’s and I recokn the Vanquish looks the biz. But I sadly haven’t driven either! The closest I’ve got is a BMW M5, and I felt sick climbing back into my own little 318. I’m saving…

RE: The Maybach!
The Maybach is made by DaimlerChrysler, hence the similarity to the Mercedes.

RE: The Maybach!
Too right mate.
I’ve got a soft spot for ones like that.
Here are a couple of piccies of the one that I designed and built over eleven years ago (sold it early this year and regretted it ever since !). The final ehxaust system ran along the bonnet sides, under the cockpit cutout and out over the back mudguards and ended in Brooklands Cans with fishtails and absolutely no sound deadening materiel inside….glorious bellow on full song (‘kin deafening more like, but it looked the part so I didn’t mind)
cheers
Gary
