what an ugly ship (ugly as in Mi-24 kind of good ugly). So does some one actually man those cannon turrets? or is it electronic?

Two Bora class are in service, both with the Black Sea fleet IIRC. Skorpion still has to be built…

What about the Bora Class Corvette and the Scorpion Class Patrol boats?

They need to manage it a bit more properly, but then it wont be good either if they pull all the heavies out quick of service, else many piles around the areas too wud raise their heads, so have to keep these untill the new small but powerful corvettees (Pocket Destroyers) take on duty in good numbers, and thats what Russia need to concentrate on for keeping off anyone having any dreams on the high seas.

I guess the 4000nm for these corvettees with 12 x Klub or Yakhont SSM is good enough for now untill the pocket gets better to pull out many a dream projects which had to lay low.

Also belonging to the units that are “fitted-for-but-not-with” are the modified KrivakI frigates Pylkiy and Legkiy. They are fitted for but not with the Uran system. The racks are on the place where normally the RBU launchers are mounted. But the missiles are somewhere in hangar I suppose…
Something I never quite gotten to understand is their very spread use of certain weapons and ships. Wouldn’t it be smarter to get rid of Smetliviy? She’s the only one using Uran, together with Tartarstan and also the only one still using SA-N-3 missiles (if she has any). If she doesn’t have the SAMs anymore, why keep her? That’s 330 persons that work on a totally obsolete and useless ship. Better to get rid of her.
Also the use of certain weapons that is so spread… If Smetliviy is kept, why not place her in the Baltic fleet, same with Tartarstan, then they would at least have four ships that are equiped with Uran, all together, no trouble sending these missiles all over the country. Same with Slava class cruisers. They are the only ships using Bazalt, why not place them all in the Pacific fleet, as a measure to strengthen that fleet in face of China and to keep the weapons together. Same with crews, they could swap crews among the Slava cruisers, having more people that are very specialised in these ships!
Their economics in the Navy really suck. (even more than in my Navy, which sells a frigate for €23million after upgrading it for €35million)

Seriously, if they are just tarps, they might be trying out the old ‘microwave drying’ technique!. This is the act of trying to dry out wet kit by sticking it in close proximity to a high power/high frequency RF source – like a radar!. There was a legendary story, unverified of course, about a WEM(O) who tried to dry out a pair of trainers inside the dome of a Type909 tracker with unfortunate results i.e two neat piles of slightly melted plastic and fabric!. A couple of heavy duty tarps would probably stand the treatment a bit better!.

Doesnt look like anything ‘official’. In fact it looks a lot like a couple of folded tarps lashed to the guardrail!.

Could be an improvised antenna for a commercial ‘after market’ comms fit. I heard a while back that some Russian vessels were using commercial VHF sets to communicate with NATO and other vessels at sea for some reason. I guessed at the time that Soviet warships may not set the standard channel 16 watch prescribed by International Maritime Law but never looked into it much.

Sailors have a habit of improvising systems as and when the idea strikes!. I remember that the crew of HMS Euryalus rigged up a TV aerial in the Ikara tracker so that they could pick up local stations whenever they were sailing close to shore. This guardrail mounted object could be something very similar!.

The Su-34 should be integrated with the Klub family.

How does AGM-84 Harpoon compare to the Kh-35?

The Kh-35 has a warhead 2x as small, that’s the only thing that sucks.. but.. any advantages over the Harpoon?

Also, can the Sukhoi family carry the SS-N-27 Klub (w/e the aviation designation is)?

Question for naval experts on here. Is it a good idea to have your main gun that close to the comm deck? If a missile or some projectile were to hit the gun and artillery. Wouldn’t the huge ensuing explosion take out most of the electronics that runs the ship? (not to mention the captain and crew)

In this case “main gun” is a bit misleading. Guns are not the Veliky’s main weapon, the SS-N-19s are. In an ideal combat scenario, Veliky shouldn’t need to make use of it’s guns.

They do not look as if they are there to support the system. They seem to have handles and hinges.

Haha, of course not!!! What did I just say: First time I saw here Kashtans fully armed, meaning with those missiles!!!
I mean the bars on the basis of the module. Would it be for stability? It might have something to do with the reloading system too, although you can’t find them on the pictures Wanshan posted in the P15A thread either. The Kashtans on Talwar have those supports too. Well, I suppose they are just there to support the module, or to give it less stress on the bearing. I mean the perforated things… Don’t know, they seem not to be supporting on the floor either… Maybe a cooling system?

As you can see, these don’t have the “bars” on the sides of the module (don’t know what they serve for).

If you mean the 8 bars on the side of the Kashtan system (4 on each side) they are the SAM missiles (9M311-1E) of the system. NATO designation is SA-N-11 Grisson.

Surface combattants don’t stand a chance against this ship in such a battle, the only US could take it out is with submarines or with a large part of a Carrier Air Wing.

Velikiy has been busy quite a lot Steve, it’s not always mentioned, but she really is active. Remember when she was called back to port by Kuroyedov? She was on practice too then… She was on practice in the Baltic this summer, in the Atlantic too. and more of that.
She seems to be armed fully now. First time I see her with the Kashtans having their missiles too. They seem to have changed the Kastans a bit too.

As you can see, these don’t have the “bars” on the sides of the module (don’t know what they serve for). And have a different colour, but I suppose that can be changed very rapidly.
This picture was taken while still in building yard, so I suppose the Kashtans weren’t ready yet.

Pete, the gun is in the back, it will give no problem, since the bridge is about 200m in front of the gun. And if the explosion of the gun hits that part, I don’t think there’s anymore need for a captain or crew, since then she will be quite lost anyway. That is also the reason why she carries a certain armor I suppose. The part you see behind the gun (or in front, considering the real front and back of the ship), is the helicopter operations command tower, not the bridge.
