[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-04-02 AT 05:21 PM (GMT)]In my absence, I’ve been researching a topic that I concider fasinating, Close In Weapons Systems! I was wondering which CIWS you people out there felt is the most deadliest of these? And why do you think they are? How effective would they be againd an a/c? I’m limiting this to just gun mounted CIWS’s as we all know there are missile systems out there as well, but out of the guns which one?
Here’s a list if you’re not sure!
1. 20mm Phlanx, 6 barrel rotary based on the M61A1 Vulcan.
2. 30mm Goalkeeper, 6 barrel rotary based on the GAU-8
3. 30mm Sea Zenith, 4 barrel quad gun, highest azimuth of all CIWS
4. 20mm Meroka, 12 barrel turrets with a 9000rpm speed
5. 30mm and 40mm Breda, all twin barrel, making use of light weight turrets.
6. AK 630-6, 6 barrel rotary very small very fast and very deadly
7. 30mm Emerlec, manned turret, opperates manually or automatically!
8. something not listed.
Below are pics of the systems above.
1. Phlanx.
2. Goalkeeper.
3. Sea Zenith (can be seen behind the 5″ gun on this Turkish ship also on the side next to the hangar).
4. Meroka (note the electro optical tracking system).

6. 40mm Breda (as seen on this Malaysian ship).
