On 8 March 1949 Anson I G-ALFJ suffered an engine failure on take off from Croydon. Apparently it stalled and spread itself across the front and roof of the Rollason (?) hangar. I don’t know who was the pilot but it was owned by a Sqdn/Ldr Kenneth Nelson of 53 Park Hill Road, Croydon. The pilot escaped uninjured but the Anson was written off. There was an AAIB investigation and a report. The CAA has lodged the file with the National Archives at Kew but it is marked that it may not be made available for public inspection for 75 years, i.e. not before 1 January 2025. Does anyone know why the AAIB file has been so classified – or anything about the circumstances of the crash, or those involved in it, that justifies the 75 year embargo?

Thank you, both. I have now made an online FoI application requesting the NA to review the decision to withhold public access to this file until 1 January 2025.

Thank you. Anyone going to Kew in the near future? It’s rather a long journey for me!

If it helps, the report is filed under two references. Reference BT 217/2474 seems to be open while the earlier one 2455 is closed.
