The 'Northern Ireland' Thread

My opinion of this whole saga is that all the information being withheld should be released in its entirety and not watered down in any way. British forces tortured many humans in Northern Ireland so i wouldn’t be surprised if they did it in Guantanamo. We all make a massive noise about Guantanamo but no one mentions Castlereagh Interrogation Centre in Northern Ireland run by British forces, physical and emotional torture were routine there.

This thread is going nowhere. The majority are all agreed and the extemists will never agree. A bit like Northern Ireland, in fact. Fortunately the minority is being squeezed ever smaller and perhaps will, one day, become an irrelevance.

Agreed, the thread is now closed.

If The Brits played the same game as The IRA , then the game would have been over in a very short time
The IRA complained bitterly when the SAS units went into Ireland because they weren’t constrained like the regular army and the so called freedom fighters didn’t like the medicine dealt out to them.
The troubles in Northern Ireland will never end especially with the attitude of some in this thread

Gentlemen,

Please do not be side-tracked into discussing an individual rather than the issue at hand.

Thanks

Kath has the naive view of a girl of her young age (which I won’t reveal) that the NI issue can be sorted in a big white building in East Belfast amicably……..

So all I say is if you want a United Ireland you gotta fight for it and not negotiate with Orangemen!

But it will be sorted out by someone sitting 4 miles from Edinburgh Airport spouting Religious and political hatred and violence?

Let’s treat the kind of comments that Kath refers to with the utter contempt they deserve and move on, shall we?

We were talking about Northern Ireland……..

Until his posts were deleted I am sure he referred to “private exchanges” with Kath and lead us to infer that the two of you had been conducting moderately civilised exchanges. Clearly not.

I think our “friend” has a severely warped view of things and we are certainly better off without him. Sorry, if that’s personal, Mods, but possibly acceptable as we are discussing an ex-member.

As for this thread we are all hopeful that things really will get better and some are even optimistic.

And since our last exchanges policing and justice will be devolved next month so the Republican supporters really have got most of what they wanted out of Good Friday. The recalcitrant UUP will continue to cause problems and represent the feelings of a significant minority.

Well said. I had hoped lessons would be learned by said member and we could look forward to a civilised, intelligent, and informed debate between him and Kath (certainly get that from her side at least). Perhaps I was being too optimistic, or maybe naive in giving him the benefit of the doubt. He has disappointed but not surprised me on this, as Joey says there’s no place for such blinkered, extremist views here is there? Specially from someone incapable of comprehending why they’ve been asked to go away and think about what they say for a while. Personally I’d have left the post up to show just what sort of person the mods were dealing with.

Well I for one can well do without EGPH’s manor and attitude here. If he doesn’t like way the forum is moderated why doesn’t he leave us alone and enjoy his other more liberally run forums.

The use of the word Gestapo to describe the mods is hardly going to make him any friends.:(

And it’s been so peaceful…

So you’ve been a model of open mindedness and seen both sides of the story all the way through this thread then?

This particular thread has had some very well thought out posts with many pertinent points posted on it while you’ve been on your, er, sabbatical. Points that have been discussed in a well thought-out, balanced, intelligent manner. With your return I feel that sadly, the chances of this remaining the case are very small indeed.

By the way I doubt poking the mods with a pointy stick is the way to make friends and influence people.

Well said Joey. I was only working over there a short time, but was very glad when I was able to leave I’ll admit.

Many of us certainly do feel for you and share your worries. Sadly the media are fickle in their attention to news, headlining a new incident and dropping any reference to it as it fades from view. Some of us do understand how life must still be on a knife-edge in some areas and can only hope that gradually conditions will continue to improve and that your lives can return to normality.

Very sad to hear about recent events in Newry and this simply highlights the fact that we have not totally left our past behind us yet. Whilst it has been said by many people that the actions of these criminals do not represent the wishes of the vast majority of people in Northern Ireland I must reiterate it as all this is doing is instilling fear into Northern Irish households. We should count ourselves lucky that no one lost their lives in this attack but as the PSNI have said that was simply luck and apparently just 10 minutes before the blast went off there had been a group a school age girls outside the church across the road from here the bomb went off. Could have been a number of innocent schoolgirls dead for what, absolutely nothing but a very small group of extremists wanting to play at “being the liberators of Ireland”.

Gerry Adams made a very valid point during an interview in the hours following the attack saying how he is yet to hear a representative from any group be it the RIRA or CIRA come out and defend their group’s actions. These guys are such cowards that they blow up a van and the run away from the devastation. Gerry Adams also remarked that the PIRA during the 70s and 80s always had spokespeople who came out and told the media exactly why they were doing what they were doing!

I can tell all those not living in Northern Ireland that people across our province will be worried about this attack as they will be wondering where they will strike next and whether it will be across the street from them. All this group is doing is making Northern Ireland a worse place to live and certainly not winning support for its actions.

Indeed so; these maniacs have few friends on either side of the border or on either political wing. But it doesn’t take much to cause mayhem, destruction and worst of all, loss of life.

At least all sides are roundly condemning the bombing anyway…
