The Observer: "Virgin USA to get A319/320s."

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/business/story/0,6903,1207723,00.html

some quotes from the article.

Virgin will this week announce plans to order more than 100 aircraft from Airbus for its new US low-cost airline in a deal that could be worth more than $3 billion.

Virgin will take a mix of Airbus’s A319 and A320 short-haul planes

Fred Reid, chief executive of the new carrier, […] is expected to announce delivery of 30 planes in the 18 months following the airline’s launch, likely to be in the first quarter next year. Up to a further 100 planes will be optioned.

The deal is to be financed by Gecas.

The decision on where the airline will be based – New York or San Francisco – is expected within the next two weeks.

Sounds interesting. I did not expect this.

The Airbus series is outselling the 737 series by far, not talking about the numbers built
You have to remember the 737 has had about 30 years start on the Airbus, but in today’s overall sales, the Airbus is a mile in front

An amendment to my previous post. Southwest has no flights in/out of SFO, only San Jose (SJC) and Oakland (OAK), both of which are pretty hubs for WN. This makes even more sense for VirginUSA to make a base out of SFO.

SFO makes more sense. They have no lo-co’s based there, and Southwest has a very small SFO presence. They would obviously have to compete with UA, but competing with majors is nothing new for lo-co’s. I don’t see them being based in New York unless it’s EWR. JFK already has Jetblue, and I don’t realistically see 2 lo-co’s being based at the same airport. LGA really isn’t suited for that type of operation, as slots are limited as it is.

With order books for the 737 overflowing. Over 5000 737’s built and sold, more than ALL of airbus put together… Oh sure the 737 is realy being outsold. 😉

Joking aside, one realy can;t say anything is being outsold untill deliveries take place.
And if the A320 series ever gets as high as 7000 odd delivered… then and only then will it “outsell” the 737 series. Although by then, the total number of deliveries for the 737 will probably be in advance of 7000.

But sure thing, lotta locos going for the A320 series on account of some very aggressive deal making by airbus.
But it seems Boeings new CEO is spoiling for a fight and may get competative.

Airtran just put in their order for 737’s. Southwest is still booming and taking 737’s.
