The "other" duxford

Moggy, you say you are involved with Duxford, whats the long term future of the other side of Duxford Aerodrome? Its a real shame nothings done with it, you would think you could loads of displays in there.

RE: Duxford North.

what a pity nobody had the thought to do the like with Hendon. Its ridiculous that a private collection can do so much where as a national one cant.

duxford really should the Bench mark for all national collections.

Sadsack…any changes that are made at Duxford will always be sympathetic to the unique atmosphere at Duxford…I have visited many museums and realised that the atmosphere and spirit of Duxford is unique, as many people do…:)

The WWI hangers are listed buildings and are safe…I believe the buildings on the north side are listed too…

RE: Duxford North.

The atmosphere is somthing lacking in most museums. I hope that future developments at Duxford dont destroy it. such as the area round the WW1 hangars, its incredible.

RE: Duxford North.

Yes, the atmosphere really is something different here…over Christmas it snowed here at Duxford and I was the only one at work…I had the whole of the north side to myself…and if I turned in the right direction the 21st century just slipped away…

It was as though I had gone back in time to RAF Duxford, Christmas 1940…it was a lovely crisp morning…the buildings dusted with snow…sparkling in the sunshine…if I looked and listened very hard, I could see the WAAFs coming out of their living quarters and heading to the dining quarters for breakfast…the airmen lined up on the parade ground for square bashing…the pilot with a broken leg looking out of his window in the sick quarters watching the men on parade…the NAAFI stocking up for the day…the officers settling down to breakfast in the Officer’s Mess…trips being made to the ration store…and the sound of Merlins starting up in the distance…

This place is full of memories…and I’m proud of it 🙂

RE: Duxford North.

Yup, it’s Ashley, not me.

I’m just a punter there, other than when I hold my weddings in the Officers Mess. Unfortunately (Or fortunately – if you knew Mrs Moggy) That one was/is the only one likely to happen.

However if any other readers fancy doing it I’m prepared to act as unpaid consultant and guarantee you a stonking day you’ll never forget including hire of the comedy duo of my two best chums.

I agree also that the atmosphere over there, because it is almost preserved in suspended animation, is incredible, even when just walking to and from the parking to a display.

A genuine time capsule.

Moggy

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-01-02 AT 05:02 PM (GMT)]Hi Sadsack :)…I’m the “Duxford Correspondent”…I work for the Imperial War Museum’s Film and Video Archive, based on the “other” side as you put it 🙂 There is plenty ‘done’ with these buildings…several IWM Departments within the IWM Collections Division are based here…some of the buildings are leased by private operators…and there’s all sorts of bits kept in safe storage over here…

There are no plans to open the “other” side to the public at present…sorry 🙂
