The Pacific

The WW2 based TV series by Spielberg / Hanks.
It’s damn good.
Same SFX and grittiness as Band of Brothers. Some personal angles to lock into aswel, to keep the women happy.

The yanks had hell out there, a lot of brits don’t remember that due to the Overpaid;overhere attitude.

I think the whole point was to stop you latching on to one or two of them. For example the use of generally unknown actors, there is nobody to pick out as a hero amongst what is indeed a band of brothers.

I’ve just watched episode 9, the action scenes still make me flinch, if I have a problem with the series, its a bit disjointed when it jumps from character to character and I find myself caring about them less than I did in say, Band Of Brothers. You forget the link between “Sledge” and the initial Marines who featured earlier (least ways, I did…)

Well worth viewing I still say, but I think they tried to catch lightning in a bottle and fell a little short.

I’ve had problems sleeping more than once after the battle scenes though, not through shock and gore, just the brutal reality of it.

Tom Hanks saved the best for last in the last episode.

Anyway, episode 10 has been n gone. It was the epilogue.
It was more of a closure episode, finishing with the “What happened to the people in this film”, which is always interesting and brings home the fact (That we too often forget) that real people with ordinary lives went and did that sort of thing for our freedom.

I think you are misreading J Boyle’s intentions.

Perhaps I did initially, but I hope we’ve sorted it out now.

However there is an element of hypocrisy amongst those in authority and in the media who seek to control what is acceptable and what is not. Where children might be watching the reponsibility is with the parents and for everyone the “off” button is always available.

Agreed. Also, as I implied, I don’t think glimpses of light nudity on TV (e.g. a tush) is an actual threat towards children. Jeez.

I wasn’t necessarily trying to make you out as a prude. I can’t read minds and wondered about your motive. Sorry if it turned out wrong.

I remember the Janet Jackson Super Bowl controversy and a few indecency complaints about some TV shows (e.g. NYPD Blue). I realise that some shows contain scenes which may not be suitable for all audiences, i.e. very graphic depictions of violence, rapes etc. But then there are some people who seem to be very sensitive about even light nudity, and I don’t get it.

What’s the big deal?

Sorry about going OT.

OK. I guess it may come down to personal opinion regarding exposure to children.

I’m so glad you approve…

I don’t have problems with children and exposure…also no children. 😀

Still instead of making me out as a prude, again please note I was commenting in light of PeeDees waring about language about characters using the “F word”.

If he cautioned about that, I thought some might like a caution about children seeing people doing actual “F ing”.

Hehe, why warn about nudity?

My comment clearly quoted the #9 post…the person (PeeDee) was giving a warning about language in case children were watching…so my comment was just an addition to that. Nothing more.

Just a warning about episode three, a bit of female nudity, courtesy of an Aussie lass…not that there is anything wrong with that.

The parts I have seen didn’t work for me. Predictably good Spielberg action stuff but no soul. And that goes for all his “war” films, for me.

I wonder how many people in the USA recognise the name Bill Slim, or know about the Burma Campaign?

If anybody wants to read a good personal reminiscence on the Burma Campaign, I’ve found nothing more impressive so far than “Quartered Safe Out Here” by George MacDonald Fraser (of Flashman fame.)

Is anybody still watching this? I’m up to Ep 8, it is a bit hit and miss but overall, very high quality and the action sequences especially really stand out.

I was disappointed, it didn’t have the same sense of period feeling as Band of Brothers.

I understand that, less background at home and no basic training to build the characters and period, it did go straight into the action. Once it started though, I thought it was a fantastic piece of TV, it looked great on my Sky HD box but (as above) the night attack on the bunkers was very vivid and as real as I would ever want to imagine that it could be. I had trouble sleeping afterwards as it was still zipping around my mind.
