The people speak – no way BA!

AIR PASSENGERS UP BUT BA DOWN

AIR passenger figures for January are 1.8% up on the same month last year.

The statistics hide massive changes at Ronaldsway Airport, with EuroManx, British European/Flybe and Flykeen all increasing their passenger numbers while BA CitiExpress is down more than 8,000 passengers.

Airport director Philip Pain said “This was a record January, beating last January by 1.8 per cent”

“This relatively modest growth again disguises the fundamental shift in the pattern of airline activity that has taken place. EuroManx added 5,028 passengers, British European/Flybe 3,925 and Flykeen 427. These growth areas were offset by 8,638 fewer passengers carried by BA CitiExpress, compared with the former Manx Airlines.

The fastest growing route continues to be London City, operated by Flybe, up by 1,633 passengers – 53 per cent”.

So…it is official! BA is not a well liked company on the Isle of Man – the people seem to have indicated their displeasure!

RE: The people speak – no way BA!

Coutesy of a miling list i’m on…

Hey Members;
I can announce that this evening, I was luckly to spot the new Eastern
Airways J41, in complete colour scheme the aircraft is (G-MAJM), which
arrived on the Aberdeen this evening.

After that there was nothing much to notice, the same normal activities,
well BMi, changed back to a Fokker 100 on the evening LHR, not something we
can complain about.

Well have a good evening all.
Thanks,
Tomas.

Just to note: spotting this evening 1830- 1900.
G-BVJA Fokker 100 BMi t/f LHR.
EI-CJE B732 Ryanair t/f DUB. *Jaguar livery*
G-MAJM J41 Eastern a/w t/f Aberdeen
*was in full Eastern A/W colours.

RE: The people speak – no way BA!

I’ve flown on G-MAJA and G-MAJF. The former was in Manx Airlines colours until last year.

Interestingly it was in British Midland colours in 1995, according to a pic I saw on a.net!

RE: The people speak – no way BA!

I know this sounds a bit trite and high and mighty, but BA mess people around at their peril.

The Isle of Man is an affluent community and most locals do a great deal of travelling during the year, not just short haul stuff. My own employer spends over £500,000 a year on travel and that covers under 50 staff (and 30 of them are secretarial/support staff). The number of gold and silver executive club cards I see on briefcases is amazing.

The Island is also a vibrant democracy (the world’s oldest) and a conversation in a pub is enough to spark off action by ministers. In fact BACE publicly protested a few months ago at the amount of “hassle” they were getting from the Government over standards.

Needless to say, the new carriers (Flybe and EuroManx) are getting all the help and assistance they could ask for from the authorities!!

RE: The people speak – no way BA!

Oh indeed the drop in standards is apparent. Although I cannot comment on the ticket distribution (Always get my paper ticket way before the trip), I can vouch that the in-flight service has definitely dropped in quality. The crew still remains of an excellent standard but compared to what it used to be on domestic services, there is an evident difference. Examples being how I once was eligible to a meal on the short trip to Gatwick, now only a packet of pretzels. However, it is naive to think that BA would stick to this superior service forever. With cost cutting and the risk the increasing popularity of low cost airlines pose, it is no wonder BA has put cost before service.

Eastern are already operating Leeds-Aberdeen from BA Citiexpress and it’s advertised all over the Eastern website still

RE: The people speak – no way BA!

It isn’t just routes BA are cutting – it is standards, too.

A friend flew IOM-LPL last week. He went to ba.com to book the tickets (which is what they tell you to do) but there was an error on the website and it wasn’t accepting online payments that day.

So he called the reservations number, as requested. They took payment, but…

He was charged £10 extra for making an “off line” booking!

To make matters worse, the flight was in the next 3 days. So the tix couldn’t be posted. So they charged ANOTHER £10 so that he could pick them up at the airport!!

They keep on blathering on about e-tickets and so forth, but they haven’t made it available. They have ATM-type machines all over the place, in nearly every airport except IOM. But despite having paid for his flight and having a booking ref, he couldn’t check in until he had a paper ticket. I think the Easyjet/Ryanair model is actually more customer friendly than the BA one!

The bit that annoys me personally though, is that they refuse to allow you to transfer bags through LGW to LHR.

In terms of domestic service (not long haul, which is quite good) they have really gone downhill.

RE: The people speak – no way BA!

Well it is sad that this is happening to the former Manx service but what do expect from an airline that cuts so many of their domestic routes?
Pleasing that other airlines passenger figures are up though. I think our BE passenger figures at GCI are up as well after their effort to offer low cost fares.
